St. George leads Bryant to game one win; UD rallies in game two

BEL AIR, Md. – Junior Daniel St. George's (Shelton, Conn.) solo home run to center in the top of the 10th broke a 9-9 tie and sent the Bryant University baseball team to a 10-9 victory over Delaware on Saturday at Harford Community College. The Blue Hens rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win game two, 5-4.

The home run was the second of St. George's career and the fifth hit by the Bulldogs (10-8) as they survived a late rally from the Blue Hens (10-12) to win their fourth-straight game. Bryant won the series 3-1.

GAME ONE

With the game tied in the 10th, St. George laced a 2-1 fastball to dead center to break the deadlock. Sophomore Michael Marshall (Maynard, Mass.) earned the first save of his career as he stranded runners on first and second in the bottom of the 10th.

The game didn't appear to be heading to the 10th as the Blue Hens loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With his back to the wall, junior closer Trevor Lacosse (Watervliet, N.Y.) reared back and struck out the next two batters to leave the bases loaded. He earned his first win of the season as he struck out four and allowed three runs on five hits over 2.2 innings of relief.

After waiting an inning to score in both games on Friday, the Bulldogs got right to work in the first inning on Saturday. Junior John Mullen (Walpole, Mass.) singled to left, classmate Jordan Mountford (Guelph, Ont.) worked a walk and freshman Matt Albanese (East Haddam, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. St. George plated the first run with a sac fly to left and senior Tom Gavitt (North Stonington, Conn.) followed with a three-run blast to dead center to make it 4-0. It was his second home run in three games.

Bryant used the long ball to score each of its next four runs as well. After a Brandon Bingel (Peabody, Mass.) single in the fourth, Carl Anderson (Sudbury, Mass.) and Mullen hit back-to-back home runs to the same spot in left center to give Bryant a 7-1 lead. In the fifth, sophomore Robby Rinn (Warwick, R.I.) joined the home run parade as he hammered a 2-1 breaking ball over the center field fence to make it 8-1.

The Bulldogs tacked on a final run in the seventh. Gavitt singled and Dan Cellucci (Sudbury, Mass.) walked before Daniel Palazzo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) knocked a two-out single through the left side to make it 9-1.

Delaware put together a rally in the seventh, scoring eight runs to tie the game. A single and a walk started the inning and Ryan Hartley followed with a three-run home run to center to make it 9-4. After a double and a walk, an infield single plated another run with two outs. A hit batter loaded the bases and Doug Trimble followed with a game-tying grand slam to right center to make it 9-9.

Sophomore Kyle Wilcox (Sandy Hook, Conn.) was dominant for the Bulldogs, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out three and walked three on the day. A leadoff home run from Alex Mottle in the second was the only blemish to his afternoon. Wilcox got some help defensively as well in the second and third. Cellucci made a sliding back hand play in the hole at short to start an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play in the second and Rinn snared a line drive and doubled off the runner at first in the third.

Mullen finished the day 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Anderson (2-4, 2 RBI) and Gavitt (2-5, 3 RBI, 2 runs) each added multiple hits.

GAME TWO

The Bulldogs took a 4-2 into the bottom of the seventh but the Blue Hens rallied for three runs to earn a walk-off victory. A bloop single and a double put the tying runs on second and third with one out. After a sac fly made it 4-3, it appeared the Bulldogs would win as the next pitched was popped up on the left side of the infield. The ball got caught in the wind and dropped out of the glove of the infielder, allowing the tying run to score. Joe Giacchino singled through the right side to score the winning run.

Delaware's late rally spoiled a strong start from freshman Jack Patterson (Suffield, Conn.). He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out six. Patterson faced the minimum over the first three innings and pitched scoreless baseball over the first four innings. The only damage he allowed prior to the seventh was a pair of solo home runs to Ryan Hartley and Cameron Travalini in the fifth and sixth.

Bryant scored all of its runs in the second inning. Freshman Zane Smith (Ilion, N.Y.) doubled to right center to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Cellucci launched his first career home run, a three-run shot, over the wall in left center to make it 4-0.

Mullen finished with two hits, while Marshall suffered his first loss of the season, allowing the final unearned run.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to open their home schedule on Tuesday, March 25 against UMass Lowell. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Conaty Park.
