Summer ball update: Six Bulldogs selected to All-Star games
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Highlighted by six all-star selections, members of the Bryant University baseball team are continuing to put up strong summers.
Cape Cod Baseball League
Rising senior Mickey Gasper (Merrimack, N.H.) has continued to put up tremendous numbers on the Cape. Selected as the East Division starter at first base in the All-Star Game, Gasper is hitting .308 with seven doubles, five home runs, 26 RBI and 26 walks. He ranks 14th in the league in hitting, sixth in home runs, second in RBI, first in walks and fourth with a .441 OBP.
Rising junior Nick Angelini (Bedford, N.H.) is hitting .227 (10-44) with a double, triple and a home run for Wareham. He has driven in four runs, scored seven times and has two stolen bases.
New England Collegiate Baseball League
Rising sophomores Jimmy Titus (Stafford, Conn.) and Chris Wright (Cumberland, R.I.) have helped Ocean State become the top-ranked summer team in the country with a 27-9 record. Titus, selected as the starting shortstop for the South Division in the All-Star Game, has excelled in 20 games with the Waves, hitting .284 with four doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI. He enjoyed a stretch in early July in which he went 13-for-25 with six RBI over a six-game stretch.
Wright has been a model of consistency all summer for the Waves, hitting .320 with a .462 OBP as the everyday first baseman. He has four doubles, three home runs, 13 RBI and 20 runs scored. Wright has walked 18 times, been hit nine times and struck out just 16 times on the season. He has reached in 28 of the 30 games he's played in, ranking second in the league in OBP. On the mound, he's struck out 13 in 10 2/3 innings, surrendered just four hits and has a 1.68 ERA.
Rising senior Logan Lessard (Cromwell, Conn.) and rising junior Steve Theetge (Syracuse, N.Y.) both have continued to pitch well for Mystic. Lessard is 1-0 with two saves and a 1.50 ERA in 12 appearances. He has struck out 16 and allowed just four hits in 12 innings. Lessard has struck out seven of the last 11 batters he's faced.
Theetge continues to post eye-popping numbers, having struck out 30 to just two walks in 29 1/3 innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out five over five scoreless in his most recent start on July 24. Theetge now boasts a 0.89 WHIP.
Rising junior Tyler Panno (Rivervale, N.J.) is hitting .260 (20-77) with three doubles, nine RBI and eight runs scored for Danbury. He's also second on the team with six stolen bases. After breaking the program record with eight triples this season, Panno hit his first of the summer on July 20 at New Bedford.
Rising senior Jack Patterson (Suffield, Conn.) currently ranks fourth in the NECBL with 40 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings. He is 1-2 with a 5.01 ERA in eight appearances, five starts. Patterson enjoyed his most dominating outing of the season on July 21 when he allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out 12 over seven innings against New Bedford.
Futures Collegiate Baseball League
Rising sophomore Mason Palmieri (Lincoln, R.I.) continues put together a dominant season on the mound for Brockton. Selected to the Futures League All-Star Game, Palmieri currently leads the league with astounding 1.09 ERA in eight starts. He has allowed just four runs, struck out 33 and walked just eight in 33 innings. Palmieri's last start came on July 15 when he allowed four hits and struck out six over five scoreless.
Rising senior Ross Weiner (Woodbridge, Conn.) is 4-1 with a 4.29 ERA for Bristol. He has struck out 31 in 35 2/3 innings. Weiner allowed two runs on five over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win on July 22 in his most recent start.
Incoming junior Dante Ricciardi (Worcester, Mass.) is hitting .205 with 14 runs scored for Worcester. Rising sophomore Bryan Hart (Franklin, Mass.) has three home runs and eight RBI, while classmate Jack Owens (Scituate, R.I.) is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in eight appearances. He has struck out 17 and allowed just eight hits in 10 innings.
Rising junior Craig Lacey (Westfield, Mass.) is 1-1 with five saves and a 3.25 ERA in a team-high 14 appearances for Pittsfield. He has struck out 22 and walked just seven in 19 1/3 innings. Lacey had his longest outing of the season on July 9, allowing one run and striking out four over three innings.
Rising redshirt junior Justin Snyder (Georgetown, Mass.) is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 12 appearances for Nashua. He has struck out 15 in 18 innings. In July, Snyder has allowed just two runs on five hits over 7 1/3 innings.
Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
Rising junior Nathan Wrighter (Windsor, N.Y.) was named to the East Division All-Star team and picked up the save in the PGCBL All-Star Game on July 18. He is 3-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 10 appearances, five starts. Wrighter has struck out 34 and walked 12 in 41 1/3 innings.
Incoming freshman Tyler Mattison (Fort Ann, N.Y.) was selected to the PGCBL Prospect Game thanks to a strong start to the summer. He is 3-1 with a 5.25 ERA in five starts for Glens Falls. Mattison has struck out 32 batters in 24 innings. He allowed just one run on one hit and struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings in his last start on July 22.
Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League
Rising sophomore Gaby Cruz (Miami, Fla.) and rising redshirt freshman Nash Eppard (Essex, Conn.) have helped Bethesda to its third-straight South Division title with a 31-9 regular-season record. The Big Train are the top seed in the playoffs and will look win back-to-back championships. Cruz is hitting .275 (14-51) with seven RBI, while Eppard is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 11 appearances. Eppard has struck out 28 and walked 11 in 27 innings. In his best outing of the year, he allowed one run on three hits and struck out six over the final six innings in what was a 15-inning win for Bethesda.
Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League
Rising sophomore Jack Ipsen (Eatontown, N.J.) turned a strong start to the summer into an All-Star selection as a member of Riverhead. Ipsen went on to earn the win in the All-Star Game, pitching a scoreless inning of relief. He is 2-0 with two saves and a 2.25 ERA in 13 appearances. Ipsen has struck out 17 and walked just nine in 20 innings. He has posted eight-straight scoreless outings before surrendering three runs on four hits over three innings on July 22.
