Late homers sink Bulldogs on Sunday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook University used a pair of two-run home runs to earn a 5-3 victory over the Bryant University baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.

Bobby Honeyman gave the Seawolves a 3-2 lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh and Dylan Resk broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Bryant received 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball from senior Jack Patterson (Suffield, Conn.). The senior lefty walked two and struck out seven in the ballgame. Junior Nathan Wrighter (Windsor, N.Y.) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, tossed a scoreless sixth but was victimized by the two home runs. They were the first two home runs he's allowed this season.

  • Stony Brook loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning. Already down 1-0, Bryant called on Wrighter and he induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
  • With two outs in the seventh, Honeyman went down and got a breaking ball from Wrighter and was able to lift it over the right field wall, giving Stony Brook a 3-2 lead.
  • After Bryant tied the game in the top of the eighth, Resk hit the game-deciding two-run home run to left field.

How it happened

  • Stony Brook opened the scoring with a run in the fourth. Michael Wilson doubled with one out and scored on a single from Resk.
  • Bryant was able to take the lead with two runs in the sixth. Junior Tyler Panno (Rivervale, N.J.) singled, senior Mickey Gasper (Merrimack, N.H.) walked and sophomore Chris Wright (Cumberland, R.I.) laid down a perfect bunt that was thrown away at first, allowing Panno to score. Gasper came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
  • Honeyman's home run in the seventh made it 3-2.
  • In the top of the eighth, Gasper walked, went to second on a ground out and scored on sophomore Gaby Cruz's (Miami, Fla.) single to right field.
  • Resk then gave the Seawolves the lead for good with his two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.
