Bulldogs fall to No. 24 ODU, 7-6

NORFOLK, Va. – The Bryant University baseball team rallied from down four runs to tie the game in the eighth before eventually dropping a 7-6 decision to No. 24 Old Dominion.

Matt Woods led the way for the Black and Gold, going 3-for-3 with four RBI. John Tuccillo added a pair of hits, while Logan Allen and Derek Smith each scored twice.

Trailing 6-5 in the eighth, Tuccillo used his speed to tie the game. With the bases loaded, Tuccillo broke for home as the pitcher came to his set, stealing home to tie the game.

Old Dominion, however, answered in the bottom of the eighth, grabbing the lead on a single to right field.

How it Happened

  • ODU jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Saturday. The Monarchs hit a three-run home run in the first and then added a run in the second.
  • The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the top of the third. Derek Smith plated the first run with a single to center and Woods followed with a two-run single into right.
  • ODU made it 6-3 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third.
  • Woods pulled Bryant within a run in the fifth with an opposite field two-run double.
  • Bryant erased the deficit in the eighth, loading the bases with two outs. Tuccillo then broke for home and slid in safely to tie the game.
  • ODU got a leadoff single in the eighth, moved the runner to second with a bunt and scored him with a single to right.   

Stats

  • Austin Wainer delivered 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit and struck out four.
  • Coleman Picard allowed one run on three hits over 2.0 innings in the loss.
  • Woods went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI.
  • Allen was 1-for-4 with two runs, while Smith was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
  • Tuccillo had two hits and stole home.
