Bryant downs Mount, 10-2, on Saturday

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Jackson Phinney homered and drove in four runs, while Carmine Petosa added three hits as the Bryant University baseball team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.

With the win, the Bulldogs secured their third-straight Northeast Conference series victory. Bryant evens its overall record at 20-20 and is now 10-7 in NEC play.

Phinney broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run home run in the fourth inning and finished with four RBI. Petosa went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Derek Smith had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Matt Woods posted two hits and drove in two.

Brett Wichrowski started for the Bulldogs and allowed two runs on four hits over 4.0 innings. He walked three and struck out five. Jackson Vanesko tossed 4.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory. He allowed six hits and struck out two.

How it Happened

  • Mount scored first on Saturday, taking advantage of a Bryant throwing error in the first inning.
  • The Bulldogs grabbed the lead with two runs in the second. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases, and Matt Smith scored the tying run with a fielder's choice. Phinney gave Bryant a 2-1 lead with a sac fly.
  • Mount tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run.
  • In the fourth, Petosa and Matt Smith both singled to set up Phinney's opposite field three-run home run.
  • Bryant added two runs in the fifth inning. Jake Gustin tripled and Derek Smith and Petosa hit back-to-back doubles to make it 7-2.
