2022 SEASON RECAP: MEN’S CLUB SOCCER

Smithfield, RI – Bryant University Men’s Club Soccer played their first season as an established club sport and participated in an established a league with coaching staff. The Bulldogs ended their season with a 1-4-4 record. This record in summary does not accurately represent the great success of a season the men had as both a team and organization. This fall, they played the following teams in the Boston/Providence League: Babson College, Boston College, Brown University, Northeastern University, Stonehill College, College of the Holy Cross, Boston University, Providence College, and University of Rhode Island.

Game Recaps:

9/10/22 vs Babson- (H)

Final Score:

Bryant University: 1

Babson College: 2

Game Details:

The Bulldogs were down 2-0 going into the second half. #10 Nick Santangelo played the ball to #7 Leslie Hickman and Hickman brought it to goal giving the Bulldogs a point, but they were unable to make a comeback. The main reason for the loss was said to be the penalty that caused the Bulldogs to go down early. It was a tough loss. The lack of chemistry during the first game of the season was said to be the weakness.

9/11/22 vs Boston College- (H)

Final Score:

Bryant University: 2

Boston College: 2

Game Details:

Boston College was undefeated with a record of 6 wins and 2 ties. The Bulldogs put up a good fight and tied the Terriers 2-2. The first goal was scored by #11 Joselito Rodrigues assisted by #8 Nick Webber. BC came back and scored on both a long shot and then a penalty to make the game 2-1. Late in the second half, freshman #14 Cian Houton whipped the ball across the field and #10 Nick Santangelo was able to head it over the goalkeeper tying the game 2-2. Santangelo describes the celebration following his goal, “One of the most memorable moments of the season was that goal, it was a great way to tie one of the best teams in the conference and boost our team’s confidence.”

9/17/22 vs Brown University- (A)

Final Score:

Bryant University: 0

Brown University: 1

Game Details:

Brown University proved to be a good opponent as their record was 5-1-1. Bryant played well and had a few chances to score. In the second half, the Bulldogs gave up a foul and Brown used that opportunity to score. Following their point, Brown defended the whole second half. #10 Nick Santangelo feels “the loss was unjust” but “we stayed in it to the very end.”

9/18 vs Northeastern -(A)

Final Score

Bryant University: 1

Northeastern University: 2

Game Details:

The Bulldogs went into the game knowing that Northeastern was going to be a tough team to beat as they were the top team in the division and had played more games. Their record had been 7-1-2. The Bulldogs felt as if they should have won but the game ended up being a 2-1 loss. Although the outcome wasn’t favorable, the Bulldogs played very well. Bryant scored the first goal early into the second half, and 5 minutes later Northeastern University scored to tie the game. Following that NU took a shot from outside the box scoring an unfortunate goal making the score 2-1 which ended up being the final. Nick Santangelo says, “this was another game we should have won or tied” and “If I had scored on my penalty we would have won or tied the game.” Again another game the Bulldogs had put up a good fight but just could not get the ball in the net.

9/24 vs Stonehill- (A)

Final Score:

Bryant University: 2

Stonehill University: 2

Game Details:

The Bulldogs went into this game coming off two losses that they believe should have been wins. Bryant had beat Stonehill 4-0 in their preseason match, so going into this game they were a bit overconfident. The final score ended up being tied at 2-2. The first half Bryant dominated on the field, and they felt like there was no competition. They believe that their downfalls during the game were the offsides calls on potential plays. About 10+ times plays were called offsides throughout the game Santangelo explains. The team failed to capitalize on key chances after halftime. The goals were scored by #30, Cam Mahoney assisted by #10 Nick Santangelo, and #7 Leslie Hickman.

9/25 vs College of the Holy Cross- (A)

Final Score

Bryant University: 0

Holy Cross: 0

Game Details:

Game ended 0-0. Both teams had a lot of chances, but no score. Holy Cross dominated the first half and Bryant, the second. Team morale was low, again another game that the Bulldogs expected to win but could not get the ball in the net. Some calls made by the refs were questionable which was frustrating for the team. However, Bryant’s strong defensive line did a great job during the game.

10/2 Game vs Boston University- (H)

Final Score:

Bryant University: 2

Boston University: 0

Game Details:

The Bulldogs played under the lights at the BU stadium turf in wet conditions to secure their first, long awaited victory of the season against Boston University. The game started physical and fast paced, BU looked to be dominating with a quick succession of corner kicks. But the Bulldogs had prepared for this. They worked fast on lethal counterattacks ending with a vicious finish from sophomore #7 Leslie Hickmann, off a rebound. Hickman had a great celebration after he ran across the whole field. The Bulldogs were up 1-0 at the half. The second half was a chaotic one as the physicality increased, but the Bulldogs had victory on their minds. Midway through the second half a BU midfielder was given 2 yellow cards for sportsmanship conduct which resulted in him being sent off the field. BU was now down to 10 men. With the man advantage Bryant was able to dominate possession, and a second goal seemed inevitable. Italian senior striker Edwardo Valle cut the ball to his left foot from outside the box, delivering the goal of the season at the top corner. The Bulldogs enjoyed heavy possession to close the game resulting in a 2-0 win.

10/8 Game vs Providence College- (A)

Final Score:

Bryant University: 0

Providence College: 1

Game Details:

Disappointing results as the Bulldogs lost one to nothing. This game was highly competitive. Bryant had performed well defensively early on with strong organization from freshman #12 Dylan Brown with a goal line clearance. Bryant had dominated the first half and offered PC no goal scoring opportunities. #18 Andrew Hinkley did an amazing job defensively. In the second half PC began to take over and dominated ball possession. Providence eventually scored off a weak freekick after Bryant failed to mark off the box. Bryant was unable to come back after this and the game resulted in yet another disappointing loss.

10/9 Game vs University of Rhode Island- (H)

Final Score:

Bryant University: 0

University of Rhode Island: 1

Game Details:

The Bulldogs played their last game of the season versus URI. This game proved to be an equal match. The seniors started the game as it was their final send off. The boys were motivated to end on a high note, but the game did not live up to expectations. Bryant lost many opportunities at possession. URI dominated the game and capitalized on a cross and their striker headed into the back of the net. Unfortunately, Bryant did have many chances on the counter attacks down the wings, yet despite their best efforts in the second half the Bulldogs were not able to score, but again put up a good fight.

Final Thoughts:

Senior Nick Santangelo who has been with the program since the start of his freshman year wraps up his final season by saying, “On the results side our wins and losses do not represent us as well as we did as an organization. Northeastern and Boston University were amazing teams, and we hadn’t lost to them, or any team, by more than one goal. Do not let our record fool you as many of our games do not accurately reflect our team’s ability. Being a senior, I am excited to see the future of the club and its successes. I am excited to watch the program only grow and become better with each passing year. Fun events, amazing goals and celebrations, and the time I spent with the guys made it worthwhile. Without the guys I would not have had such a great season.”
