HOCKEY GOES HEAD TO HEAD WITH ROGER WILLIAMS IN QUAHOG CUP TOURNAMENT

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. – This past weekend, the Bryant University Men’s Ice Hockey team hosted the 5th Annual Quahog Cup Tournament. The Quahog Cup Tournament began in February of 2016 as a way of uniting collegiate club hockey teams across Rhode Island. The tournament’s original members included Bryant University, Roger Williams University, Providence College, and Rhode Island College, however the RIC team dissolved in 2018 and we extended an invitation to Connecticut College.

Game Info

This year, Bryant faced Roger Williams University in the first game of the tournament. It was a heated head-to-head battle for the lead, and after two five-minute overtime periods and a shootout round, Roger Williams advanced to the championship game with a final score of 4-4.

Later that evening, Providence College defeated Connecticut College 7-2 and moved on to face Roger Williams in the championship game, leaving Connecticut College to battle Bryant University in the consolation game.

The next morning, Bryant dominated Connecticut College in their first shutout of the season, finishing third in the tournament with a final score of 5-0. Afterwards, Providence College fell to Roger Williams in an intense match that ended 6-4.

Highlights

  • The Bulldogs beat Connecticut College 5-0 for the first shutout of the season with freshman goaltender Cam O’Connor

  • Bryant University placed 3rd overall in the Quahog Cup Tournament

  • The Bulldogs maintain a record of 12 – 7 – 3 for the season so far

  • Bryant still maintains a chance of going to the playoffs, depending on their performance in next week’s game

Comments

  • “We came out ready to play on Friday night in front of a big crowd, knowing how important that game was to our chances of making regional playoffs and we were able to match Roger Williams’ intensity from the start. When we fell behind by two goals late in the game we did not panic but instead found a way to fight back and tie the game up in the final minutes to send it to overtime. After a hard fought overtime the game, unfortunately, had to end in a shootout where RWU was able to capitalize on a few of their attempts and beat us in the end. We rebounded on Sunday with a solid effort against Connecticut College, even though it was not the game we were hoping to play in that day. We were able to take care of business and snatch a convincing win out of the game that was led by freshman goaltender Cam O’Connor who posted a shutout in the game. All in all, we did not take the Quahog Cup back to Bryant this year, but ended up taking three out of four points from the weekend, keeping our playoff chances alive.” – #10 Captain Brian Cavanaugh
