Providence blanks Bulldogs 2-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two quick goals in the second quarter was the deciding factor as the Bryant University field hockey team fell to Providence, 2-0, on Friday evening.

JOPPE DE VRIES COMMENTS
"We started the game a lot better than we did against Lock Haven, which I am thrilled about," said head coach Joppe de Vries. "We had plenty of opportunities, but we still are not converting, and we need to start rewarding ourselves for getting the penalty corners and getting good chances. We are a very young team, and this is some of the best hockey that I've seen Bryant play, so the reward is coming. It's a quick turnaround but I am looking forward to Brown."

KEY MOMENT

• After a scoreless first quarter, Providence got on the board quickly in the first two minutes of the second frame. The Friars notched back-to-back goals within a 1:46 timespan to gain the lead that they would not surrender.

SCORING SUMMARY

• 16' – The Friars pushed the ball up the field with a string of passes and found Madison Deeds in the right corner of the circle. Deeds crossed the ball in front of the cage when Izzy Mendez tapped the ball past Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) for the first goal of the game, 1-0.
• 18' – From outside the circle, Allyson Parker played the ball inside to Niamh Gowing. Gowing fought off the Bryant defender and sent the ball to the back of the cage, 2-0.

STATS/NOTES

• Freshman Isa Oldekamp (Rotterdam, Netherlands) led the Bulldogs with two shots and one on frame. Lauren Zimmerman (Newtown, Conn.) and Ally Burdick (Cambridge, N.Y.) each tallied one shot and one shot on goal each.
• Jaarsma made five saves in between the posts.
• The Friars outshot the Bulldogs, 14-4.
• The Bulldogs earned five penalty corners.
• Bryant drops to 0-4 all-time against the Friars.
