Bryant earns first win over Lehigh, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Taryn Rauff (Johannesburg, South Africa) scored the game-winning goal as the Bryant University field hockey team notched its first win of the season over Lehigh on Sunday morning.

Junior Aisling Madden (Leeds, Yorkshire, England) tallied her first career goal with the equalizer in the third quarter while Rauff netted her first career game-winning goal.

"Hard work pays off," said head coach Joppe de Vries. "We came into this game with a team mentality, and played hard and together."

KEY MOMENT

  • 40 seconds after Lehigh's goal, Madden scored the equalizing goal to push the momentum of the game into Bryant's favor. In the fourth quarter, Rauff tapped in the game-winning goal off a deflection to win the game.

SCORING SUMMARY

  • 40' – During Lehigh's eighth penalty corner of the game, Drew Pecora inserted the ball to Lenke Havas who struck the ball through the Bryant defense for the first goal of the game, 0-1.
  • 41' – Just 40 seconds after Lehigh's goal, the Bulldogs pushed the ball up the field to Kylie Nelson (Belfast, Maine). Nelson fired a shot at the Mountain Hawk keeper who made the save. Bryant grabbed the rebound and found Madden just outside the circle. Madden carried the ball inside the arc and blasted the ball into the back of the cage to even the score, 1-1.
  • 51' – Bryant earned its sixth penalty corner about five minutes into the fourth quarter. Rauff inserted the ball to Madden, who tried again for her second goal. The Mountain Hawk defense blocked Madden's shot as Rauff quickly found the rebound and tapped it in for the game-winning goal, 2-1.

BULLDOGS NOTES AND NOTABLES

  • Five Bulldogs attempted shots including Madden who led with seven and three on frame. Nelson and Rauff each tallied four while Ally Burdick (Cambridge, N.Y.) notched three and Clare Luttrell (Freehold, N.J.) one.
  • Madden's equalizing goal marked the first of her career while Rauff tallied the first game-winning goal of her career.
  • Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) stopped seven while in between the posts.
  • Lehigh outshot Bryant, 21-19.
  • Today's game marked the most shots that Bryant has taken in a game since Oct. 23, 2016, when the Bulldogs fired 20 vs. Siena.  
  • Bryant now leads the all-time series record, 2-1.
