Madden's goal not enough against No. 23 Fairfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a series of quick goals in the first quarter, the Bryant University field hockey team fell to No. 23 Fairfield in conference play on Friday afternoon at Providence College.

COACH DE VRIES COMMENTS

"It was a great game and all in all I'm happy with how we played," said head coach Joppe de Vries. "We need to start rewarding ourselves for our hard work, but we will practice hard tomorrow so we can come out hard against Wagner on Sunday."

KEY MOMENT

• Fairfield's second goal off a rebound sealed the win for the Stags as the Bulldogs were unable to recover.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• 1' – In the first minute of the game, Fairfield took the lead off a penalty corner. Danielle Profita inserted the ball into the circle as Luzi Persiehl fired the ball at the cage. Profita helped the ball into the cage by getting her stick on it for the first goal of the game, 1-0.
• 6' – Just a few moments later, junior Aisling Madden (Leeds, Yorkshire, England) evened the score by intercepting a pass in the middle of Fairfield's defensive arc. Madden blasted the ball up and Zoe Rosen for the equalizer, 1-1.
• 11' – The Stags squeaked the ball past Bryant's defense and fired a shot at Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) in net. Jaarsma made the save but Fairfield came up with the rebound and quickly deflected the ball back into the cage for the game-winning goal, 2-1.

 BULLDOGS NOTES AND NOTABLES

• Madden netted her second career goal and led the Black and Gold with five shots and two on target.
• Jaarsma stopped four in the cage.
• Eva Bazen (The Hague, Netherlands), Taryn Rauff (Johannesburg, South Africa), and Isa Oldekamp (Rotterdam, Netherlands) all tallied one shot apiece.
• Fairfield outshot Bryant, 12-8, and notched one extra corner, 5-4.
• The Bulldogs fall to 1-6 all-time against the Stags and drop to 0-2 in the conference standings.
