Bryant scores record 138 points in win over RIC

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Seven players finished in double figure as the Bryant University men's basketball team set numerous program records in a 138-83 victory over Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center.

Originally scheduled to face UMass Lowell on Saturday night, the Bulldogs had to make a schedule adjustment when they found out the River Hawks would be unable to play. The adjustment didn't affect the Black and Gold, as they scored 74 points in the first half on their way to scoring a single-game record 138 points in their home debut. The 138 points eclipsed the previous record of 134 that was set in 1964-65 against Babson.  

Redshirt senior Peter Kiss led Bryant with 20 points and six steals, while junior Chris Childs added 17 and sophomore Charles Pride had 16 points and five boards. Sophomore Michael Green III (14), freshman Erickson Bans (14), freshman Kai Kostmayer (13) and sophomore Luke Sutherland (12) rounded out Bryant's double-digit scorers.

• Bans helped Bryant pull away in the first half as he scored 14 points in a 24-10 stretch that pushed Bryant's lead to 64-37 with 1:56 to go in the half.

How it Happened

• RIC stayed with the Bulldogs in the opening minutes before Green III broke an 11-11 tie with a trifecta that jump-started the Bryant offense.
• Bans insertion into the lineup lit a spark as well, as he scored 14 points in just six minutes to help Bryant open up a 30-point lead.
• Bryant would finish the half with 74 points.
• Sutherland closed the first half with an emphatic dunk and then started the second half with a lay in, and the rout was on.
• The Bulldogs would go on to shoot 64.1 percent (25-39) from the field in the second half to put the game away.  

Stats

• Bryant shot 59.5 percent (50-84) from the field in the game. The Bulldogs were 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from deep and 27-of-35 (77.1 percent) from the charity stripe.
• The Bulldogs outrebounded RIC, 49-40, and posted 30 assists on 50 made baskets.
• Bryant also turned the ball over just eight times in the game.
• Kiss posted 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 7-of-10 from the line. He added six steals, four rebounds and four assists.
• Childs netted 17 points (7-of-12) and had a pair of assists and steals.
• Pride posted his 16 points in just 19 minutes. He added five boards, three assists, a steal and didn't turn the ball over.
• Green III made all six of his free throws, finishing with 14 points, seven assists, four steals, three boards and a block.
• Bans netted 14 points (6-of-9) and four boards in just 10 minutes.
• Kostmayer scored all 13 of his points in the second half, finishing 6-of-8 from the field.
• Sutherland posted 12 points, a team-high eight rebounds and four blocks.   
• Joe Moon IV and Crocker each finished with nine points off the bench. Moon IV added four assists. 

Game Notes

• Bryant's 138 points are a single-game program record, eclipsing the previous mark of 134 set in 1964-65 against Babson.
• Saturday marks the second-straight year Bryant has scored in the 100's. The Bulldogs beat NVU-Lyndon 116-67 last year.
• It is also the second time in as many years the Bulldogs have had seven players finish in double figures (NVU-Lyndon).
• Bryant's 50 made field goals are the second-most in a single game in program history.  
• Bryant is now averaging 105 points per game over its first three games, having scored 84+ points in all three.  
• Bryant has shot over 40 percent in each of the first three games.
• Kiss finished with 20+ points for the second-straight game and for the fifth time in his career.
• Bans, Kostmayer, Sutherland and Crocker all posted their first points as Bulldogs on Saturday.
• Pride has posted 15+ points and 5+ rebounds in each of the first three games of the season.
• Hall Elisias blocked three shots in just six minutes and now has 86 in his Bryant career.
