Green III, Bulldogs rally past Stony Brook Saturday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Michael Green III scored a career-high 24 points and the Bryant University men's basketball team erased an eight-point second-half deficit to earn a 81-72 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center.

Green III and freshman Erickson Bans drilled back-to-back threes to pull Bryant within one and redshirt junior Luis Hurtado Jr. scored the next four points to give the Black and Gold a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Green III bested his previous career high by a point, finishing with 24 and six boards. He made all seven of his free throws to help Bryant close it out down the stretch.

Bans injected life off the bench, finishing with eight points, while Hurtado Jr. finished in double-figures (12 points) for the second-straight game. Sophomore Charles Pride added 16 points, seven boards and eight assists, and junior Chris Childs chipped in 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.

• Bans and Green III hit back-to-back threes to bring Bryant within one, 53-52, with 13:05 left. It was the start of a 15-1 run that helped Bryant grab the lead.  

How it Happened

• Pride was the spark early for the Black and Gold as he scored seven-straight points to make it 11-2 early on.
• Childs put Bryant up nine, 29-20, with 7:50 left in the half but the Seawolves closed on a 21-8 run to take a 41-37 lead to the break. Childs scored six of the eight Bryant points.
• Stony Brook pushed its lead to eight early in the second half before Green III scored the first three of his 22 second-half points.
• The Seawolves lead was eight after a three with 14:18 to go, but a technical for flopping awarded Bryant a free throw.
• Green III hit the freebie, kickstarting a game-changing 15-1 run. Bryant went 5-of-5 from the field during the stretch. Threes from Bans and Green III made it a one-point game and Hurtado Jr. followed with consecutive layups to give Bryant the lead back.
• Hurtado Jr. would cap the run with and-1, making it 60-54 with 10:53 left.
• Bans and Green III were at it again moments later, with Bans following his own miss before assisting on a trifecta from Green III.
• Green III made a layup in transition to make it a 12-point game with 3:56 left and then canned six consecutive free throws to close it out.

• Bryant finished the game 28-of-59 (47.5 percent) from the field, 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) from three and 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) from the line.
• The Bulldogs outrebounded Stony Brook, 36-33, and posted 15 assists and six steals.
