Ornelas shines in season-opening defeat

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's swimming and diving team fell in its season-opening meet on Friday night at Boston College by a final tally of 183-115.

Key Moment

After a tight start to the meet, the Eagles swept the 200 free and 100 breast to pull away and were able to keep their distance in Bryant's opener.

How the Swimmers Fared

  • Graduate student Micah Ornelas (San Diego, Calif.) finished with 27 points on the evening, winning all three of his individual races. He took home wins in the 100 back (51.80), 100 fly (48.92) and the 200 individual medley (1:52.22), as well as part of the meet-opening win in the 200 medley relay (1:33.05).
  • Sophomore Matthew Mays (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) finished with a pair of individual wins in the 200 fly (1:53.92) and 200 back (1:53.29), as well as part of the 200 medley relay win and 400 free relay second place finish.
  • Junior Robert Davis (Glastonbury, Conn.) won the 1000 free (9:57.05) on his way to a 12-point meet.
  • Senior Tavish Boyle (Springfield, N.J.) and sophomore Andrew Allen (Bedford, N.H.) joined Mays and Ornelas in the 200 medley relay victory.

Coach LoCurto's Comments

"I was pretty happy with our performance tonight. They were all at just about their season individual averages, but the big highlight was freshman Evan Clark (Doylestown, Pa.) who won the 1-meter while diving exhibition."

How the Divers Fared

  • Clark finished with a score of 267.97 diving as an exhibition for the Bulldogs, finishing with the highest score of any diver on the afternoon.
  • Senior Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) finished with a pair of top three finishes in the 1-meter (234.52) and 3-meter (228.45).
  • Sophomore Trevor Hazlewood (Corpus Christi, Texas) finished second in the 1-meter (245.32), while junior Zach Vogel (South Easton, Mass.) was third in the 3-meter (207.83).

Stats and Notables

  • Ornelas' time in the 100 fly is the second-fastest in school history, sitting behind first by 0.22 seconds.
  • His 200 IM swim also is in second after he won the event by over four and a half seconds.
  • All in all, the Bulldogs won seven races on the evening.
