Bryant earns first win of 2018 in Providence

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's swimming and diving team earned their first victory of the season on Friday night, defeating Providence 164-132 on Friday night.

Coach Cameron's Comments

"We were able to mix up the lineup a little bit and it worked well. Many showed some promise in a few new events. The divers really put us in a good position going into the swim portion. Overall, we are going to continue to work on some things and hopefully get better every week."

Key Moment

Bryant was able to grab a lead after graduate student Micah Ornelas (San Diego, Calif.), senior Tavish Boyle (Springfield, N.J.) and sophomore Matthew Mays (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) each won a race in sequence to help the Bulldogs pull ahead for good.

How the Swimmers Fared

  • Mays finished the night a perfect 4-for-4, starting with the team's 200 medley relay victory. He continued that success into a 100 back (56.91), 200 back (2:05.39) and 200 individual medley (2:08.41) individual win.
  • In addition to the relay win, Boyle swept the individual breaststroke events with comfortable wins in the 100 breast (1:04.99) and 200 breast (2:24.90).
  • Ornelas continued his hot start as a Bulldog, winning the 200 fly (2:05.50), 100 free (52.70) and 100 fly (55.14).
  • Junior Zach Digiaro (Middletown, N.J.) and sophomore Andrew Allen (Bedford, N.H.) combined with Mays and Boyle for the 200 medley relay (1:46.22) win.

Coach LoCurto's Comments

"The divers really stepped it up this week. They are really getting closer to their early-season averages and are continuing to improve as the weeks go by."

How the Divers Fared

  • The Bulldogs swept both boards as all five divers finished first through fifth in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.
  • Senior Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) and sophomore Trevor Hazlewood (Corpus Christi, Texas) each finished 1-2 on the boards. Hazlewood won the 1-meter (278.81) and Sullivan won the 3-meter (274.50).
