Mays breaks nine-year-old pool record in win over NJIT

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Matthew Mays (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) broke a nine-year-old Chace Athletic Center record on Saturday afternoon, helping the Bryant University men's swimming and diving team defeat NJIT 242-111 over the course of two days.

Coach Cameron's Comments

"We swam to three huge wins this weekend with lots of new pool records and a great amount of fast swimming. We showed that we can be tough in the end of our races. I'm just very proud of our team today."

Coach LoCurto's Comments

"The guys are still missing some dives but we had another good performance. Freshman Evan Clark was a huge standout with another great performance and is only getting better as the season goes on."

Key Moment

After a great first day, the Bulldogs finished strong in the 400 medley relay (3:25.68), with Mays joining seniors Tavish Boyle (Springfield, N.J.) and Matt Zichelli (Glen Ridge, N.J.) and graduate student Micah Ornelas (San Diego, Calif.) to finish Day 1 with an exclamation point.

How the Bulldogs Fared

  • Ornelas' end of Day 1 was a microcosm of his weekend, as he won all seven of his races and broke a total of seven school records, including three individual events. He set new marks in the 100 back (50.93), 200 individual medley (1:54.12), 100 fly (48.81).
  • Mays added a pair of individual victories in the 200 fly (1:53.46) and 400 individual medley (4:07.71).
  • Boyle also had two individual victories, winning the 100 breast (58.31) and 200 breast (2:10.16). He added a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:01.44).
  • Junior Robert Davis (Glastonbury, Conn.) won both distance free events, touching first in the 1000 free (10:09.21) on Friday night and the 500 free (4:50.39) on Saturday.
  • Sophomore Colby Dixon (Summit, N.J.) won the 200 back (1:59.90).
  • Bryant won all four relays held during the meet, including the 200 free (1:25.15), 400 free (3:07.86), 200 medley (1:33.65) and 400 medley (3:25.68).
  • Sophomore Trevor Hazlewood (Corpus Christi, Texas) won the 1-meter (259.30) on Friday night.
  • Freshman Evan Clark (Doylestown, Pa.) won the 3-meter (238.00).

Stats and Notes

  • Mays' 400 individual medley swim was the best in the Chace Pool since 2009, the oldest pool record left on the board entering the day.
  • Clark's 238.00 is a season-best for the freshman.
  • Of the 19 events, the Bulldogs won 16 vs. NJIT.
