SOFTBALL HOSTS UCONN TUESDAY AFTERNOON (4 PM) AT THE BRYANT SOFTBALL COMPLEX
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Having won three of their last four contests, the Bryant University softball team gets ready for just one game this week, as they battle the Huskies of the University of Connecticut on Tuesday afternoon at the Bryant Softball Complex. The Bulldogs swept Central Connecticut in a doubleheader last Wednesday before splitting a twin bill Sunday with Quinnipiac to finish the week with a 3-1 record. The team will have a week of in between games after Tuesday, not playing again until Wednesday, April 15 when they travel to play Albany.
WALLACE GETS WIN
NUMBER 200
With a, 4-0, victory over Central Connecticut in game one
of a doubleheader on Wednesday, Bryant head coach Lisa-Ann
Wallace got her 200th win with the Bulldog softball
program. The all-time winningest coach in the history of the
program, Wallace now has a record of 202-194-1 in her ninth season
at the helm. Sophomore Samantha Houseal (Mount Joy,
Pa.) came within one out of pitching a perfect game in the
contest, surrendering a two out double in the bottom of the seventh
to end the bid but still get the complete game shutout.
MOVING ON UP
Samantha Houseal set the record for most
strikeouts in a season against Central Connecticut on Wednesday,
setting down 15 batters on strikes in two games to give her 149 for
the year, surpassing the old record of 148 held by Janine Enos.
Houseal added six more punch-outs on Sunday, giving her 155 for the
year and 234 for her career, which ranks third all-time. The
sophomore has thrown 184.2 of a possible 216.1 innings for the
Bulldogs this season, the second most by a Bryant pitcher in a
year, behind Nicole Keene's mark of 191 innings.
THE HITS KEEP ON COMING
Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.) went
two-for-three in game one of the Sunday doubleheader against
Quinnipiac, belting her first career home run in the second inning
and then adding on her first career triple in the sixth. Martin's
two-run shot gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead, and her triple later
added on some insurance, bringing home two more runs to give her
four RBI on the day. The freshman leads the team in hitting with a
.290 average, and is riding a five-game hitting streak, going seven
for her last 15 with 12 total bases.
DOUBLE DOWN
Center fielder Lauren McCart (Vorhees,
N.J.) went three-for-five with three doubles in the
doubleheader against Central Connecticut on Wednesday. The freshman
also knocked in three runs on the day, including two in game one of
a, 4-0, victory. She added another double in game one of a 6-1 win
over Quinnipiac, giving her four hits in her last nine at-bats,
good for a .444 batting average in a four game stretch. McCart is
currently third on the team with a .250 batting average while
driving in six runs.
THREE OUT OF FOUR
With two wins over Central Connecticut and a split against
Quinnipiac, the Bulldogs have won three of their last four games.
In that stretch, the team has had six different players knock in
runs, with Martin leading the way with four. Martin has gone .500
over that stretch, while senior captain Stephanie Mirando
(North Haven, Conn.) has gone three for ten, driving in a
pair of RBI on Sunday against Quinnipiac. Fellow captain
Ashley Coon (Levittown, Pa.) is riding a
three-game hit streak entering play this week.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
The University of Connecticut Huskies have won six-straight games
coming into play on Tuesday, coming off a sweep of a doubleheader
Sunday against Central Connecticut. The Huskies have posted a 20-11
record this season, going 5-5 in Big East play. Karen Mullins is in
her 26th season at the helm, posting a record of
733-462-5 with the Huskies and having led the team to eight NCAA
tournament appearances. Julianne Towers has been the best offensive
performer, registering a .416 batting average through 31 games.
Catcher Danielle Del Ponte leads the team with 22 RBI, as the
Huskies haves seven players with ten-plus RBI. On the mound, UConn
is led by Tricia Sullivan with 12 victories, striking out 98
batters in 108.1 innings and a 1.81 ERA.
