Bulldogs rout Iona, 9-1, in Game 1 Friday, fall in extras in game two

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Behind a strong performance from junior pitcher Hayley Bottino (Canyon Country, Calif.), the Bryant University softball team took care of Iona in five innings, 9-1, in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader at the CSUN Tournament. The Bulldogs dropped game two, 2-1, to Buffalo in extra innings.

Game One

Bottino was nearly perfect in the circle for the Bulldogs (6-15), allowing just one run on five hits in five innings of work while junior Elle Madsen (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) led the way on the offensive end with three RBI, including a two-run homerun in the first inning.

After Maden's two-run blast spotted Bryant the early lead, the Black and Gold added a run in both the second and third to take a 4-1 run after three. In the fourth, the Bulldogs added two more when Haylee Haas (Moorpark, Calif.) and Liana Ogata (Tustin, Calif.) scored on a Bottino fielder's choice, before three more runs in the bottom of the fifth secured the 9-1 Bryant win.

Ogata went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Velasquez and freshman Rachel Monroe (Southwick, Mass.) each score a pair to help the Bulldogs snap a nine-game skid.

Game Two

Buffalo earned the victory in game two with an unearend run in the eighth inning. Two Bulldog (6-16) errors led to the eventual winning run for the Bulls (5-11).

With a runner placed on second in the eighth, Hayley Barrow dropped down a sac bunt to move her to third. An infield error put runners on the corners and Alexis Curtiss scored the winning run on an error in the pitching cirlce.

The tough loss spoiled a strong outing from Madsen. The righty allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out four. Buffalo's Bobby Langlois allowed just one run on four hits, walked two and struck out three in a complete-game victory.

Buffalo scored the first run of the game in the first inning. An error and a single put two runners on and Kenzie Koch delivered a two-out single to make it 1-0.

The Bulldogs tied the score in the fourth with one swing of the bat. Madeline Velasquez (Los Angeles, Calif.) hit a solo home run to knot the score.
