Drexel, Maryland defeat Bulldogs

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The Bryant Univeristy softball team fell to Drexel, 16-3, and Maryland, 9-2, to start off the Maryland Invitational.

KEY MOMENT GM 1

  • Drexel's grand slam in the second inning gave the Dragons the initial lead that they would not relinquish throughout the course of the game. 

HOW IT HAPPENED GM 1

  • Drexel started the second inning with three straight singles to fill the bases. Linda Rush then sent the ball over the fence for a grand slam, 4-0.
  • Dakota Biloadeau immediately answered to the Dragons' homerun by hitting a three-run bomb herself to bring in Kaleigh Goulart (Marion, Mass.) and Alexandra Hickey (St. John, Ind.), 4-3
  • Both teams went scoreless for the next four innings until the top of the sixth. Drexel doubled to left center before a single moved runners to first and third. The Dragons found the gap in left field that brought in one run, 5-3
  • Drexel continued to rally in the sixth inning, bringing in two more runs before hitting a three-run homerun to close out the inning, 10-3
  • The Bulldogs gave up four straight singles and two doubles in the seventh inning to help Drexel to a 16-3 outcome.

STATS GM 1

  • Carlyn Hernandez (Cypress, Calif.) and Goular both batted one-for-two in game one.
  • Bilodeau was one-for-two at the plate bringing in three runs with a homerun.
  • Junior Gabrielle Ermish (Pottstown, Pa.) struck out two batters, giving up seven hits and three earned runs over the course of five innings.

KEY MOMENT GM 2

  • Maryland's first three runs in the first inning was the only offense that the Terps needed to close out the game. 

HOW IT HAPPENED GM 2

  • The Terps opened up the first inning with a bunt and a stolen base to move to second. Maryland then tallied three consecutive hits to bring in the first three runs, 3-0.
  • With the bases loaded in the second inning, the Terps hit a ground ball to Nicole Davis (Toms River, N.J.) at second base who threw the runner out at home, which allowed Maryland to tally another run before the end of the inning, 4-0.
  • Bailey Boyd led off the third inning with a solo home run, 5-0.
  • In the fourth inning, Maryland brought in its final four runs. Amanda Brashear singled right Jocelyn Bodington (Cumberland, R.I.) in the circle to bring in the first run of the inning. The Terps capitalized on a wild pitch to bring in two more runs before a double to left center scored the ninth and final run for Maryland, 9-0.
  • Bryant refused to go down without a fight by filling the bases in the fifth inning. Morgan Powell (Murrieta, Calif.) smacked the ball to left center to bring Helaina Michaud (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Jenna Cali (Franklinville, N.J.) home.

STATS GM 2

  • Toni Camarillo (Corona, Calif.) and Nicole Zukowski (Medford, N.Y.) both went one-for-three at the plate in game two.
  • Powell also batted one-for-three and brought in two runs.
  • Cali tallied a hit during two plate appearances.
  • Senior Colby Norris (Toano, Va.) struck out two batter during the first three innings without walking a single batter.
  • Bodington closed out the final three innings with one strikeout and one walk.

GAME NOTES

  • Bilodeau's homerun produced a career-high of three runs.
  • Powell produced her first pair of runs of the season tying her career-high. The last time Powell produced two runs in a game was at Wagner in April of last season.
  • The Bulldogs are now tied with Maryland in the all-time series, 1-1.  

UP NEXT
Bryant is back at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning as the Bulldogs take on Drexel for the second time. The Bulldogs then take the short trip to UMBC at 2:30 p.m. to take a break from the Maryland Invitational before closing out the tournament Sunday morning.
