Providence tops Bryant, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team fell to Providence College in a single-game matinee, 3-1.

COACH FRENCH'S COMMENTS

"It's a game of inches," said head coach Nick French. "Toni almost makes a great diving catch that would have ended the inning but it pops out of her glove and they are able to go ahead. We were that close today against a good team and it gives us confidence going into NEC play this weekend."

KEY MOMENT

• In the fifth inning, Providence took the lead with an RBI double followed by a hard ground ball that grew the Friar's advantage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Bulldogs led off the third inning by filling the bases with Toni Camarillo (Corona, Calif.), Jenna Cali (Franklinville, N.J.), and Tiffany Bell (Egg Harbor City, N.J.). Sophomore Morgan Powell (Murrieta, Calif.) smacked the ball to the pitcher who had trouble controlling the ball. Powell reached first moving Camarillo home for the first run of the game, 1-0.
• After leading off the bottom of the third with a walk, the Friars stole second before doubling to right field to tie the game, 1-1.
• In the fifth inning, Providence notched a double to get on base, followed by a base hit that brought in the winning run, 2-1.
• Providence continued to grow its advantage in the next batter. Taylor Stephen hit a hard ground ball to Nicole Davis who was awarded an error during the play, bringing in the final run, 3-1.

STATS

• Cali and Bell each batted one-for-two.
• Senior Jessican Gradillas (Nogales, Ariz.) tallied the only other hit for the Bulldogs, going one-for-three at the plate.
• Camarillo scored the lone run for the Black and Gold.
• Colby Norris (Toano, Va.) started the game pitching the first three innings and compiling three strikeouts, three walks, and two hits.
• Junior Gabrielle Ermish (Pottstown, Pa.) relieved Norris in the circle for the final three innings. Ermish struck out two and gave up four hits.
• The Friars outhit the Bulldogs, 6-3.

GAME NOTES

• Bryant drops to 1-9 all-time against Providence.
