Early runs help Bryant sweep Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Bryant University softball team blanked Wagner in both games in a clean sweep in Northeast Conference play. The Bulldogs topped Wagner, 5-0, in game one and, 6-0, in game two.

COACH FRENCH'S COMMENTS

"It was a good day all around," said head coach Nick French. "It was huge to pick up a sweep on the road in conference. We excelled in all three phases; getting great pitching, defense and timely hitting to get on the scoreboard early on."

KET MOMENT GM1

  • Bryant compiled all the offense that it would need in the second inning by taking advantage of an error by Wagner's shortstop and notching an RBI-single for the first two runs of the game.  

HOW IT HAPPENED GM1

  • Gabrielle Ermish (Pottstown, Pa.) and Jessica Gradillas (Nogales, Ariz.) notch singles at the top of the lineup to start off the second inning on base. Sophomore Alex Hickey (St. John, Ind.) smacked a hard hit ball to Wagner's shortstop, who was unable to control the ball, to bring in Ermish for the first run of the game, 1-0.
  • Immediately following Hickey, Toni Camarillo (Corona, Calif.) found the gap in right field for an RBI-single to give the Bulldogs a two-run cushion before the end of the second inning.
  • With the bases loaded in the seventh inning, Morgan Powell (Murrieta, Calif.) hits a sac fly to center field to bring in Camarilo for the third run, 3-0.
  • Senior Kaleigh Goulart (Marion, Mass.) hit the ball to Wagner's third basemen who overthrew the ball to first to help Goulart reach. Jenna Cali (Franklinville, N.J.) took advantage of the error and scurried down the third baseline for the unearned run, 4-0.
  • The Bulldogs kept it going as Ermish grounded out to the shortstop to bring Tiffany Bell (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) home for the final run of the game, 5-0.

STATS GM1

  • Powell led the Bulldogs on the offensive end batting two-for-three with one RBI and two stolen bases.
  • Camarillo and Ermish also produced runs during game one. Camarillo finished the game batting one-for-two with one run scored, while Ermish was one-for-three at the plate with one run scored.
  • Gianna Ceccarelli (Claremont, Calif.) notched a hit in her lone at bat.
  • Dakota Bilodeau (Milford, N.H.) was the only other runner to get a stolen base in game one when she pinch ran for Ermish in the sixth inning.
  • Ermish pitched the entire seven innings with six strikeouts, two walks and two hits.

KEY MOMENT GM2

  • The Bulldogs immediately took the lead in the first inning when Goulart slapped the ball to left-center for an RBI-double to bring Powell home.

HOW IT HAPPENED GM2

  • The Bulldogs got things started early in game two when Goulart hit an RBI-double to left center to score Powell for the first run of the game, 1-0.
  • In the bottom half of the first inning, Sarah McKeveny (Bohemia, N.Y.) ended Wagner's chances at tying the game by notching her second strikeout with the bases loaded to retire the Seahawks.
  • Bryant grew its lead in the second inning by growing to a four-run advantage. Cali moved Camarillo and Marianna Politis (Arcadia, Calif.) into scoring position with a sac bunt before Bell sent the ball to the center field fence for an RBI-triple. Bell scored in the next play as Powell hit a single to the right field gap, 4-0.
  • With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Goulart compiled her second RBI of the game with a single to short left field to bring Camarillo home, 5-0.
  • Cali led off the sixth inning with a triple over the centerfielder's head. Powell brought Cali in with a sac fly to right field, 6-0.

STATS GM2

  • Bell and Goulart each batted two-for-four in game two producing two runs apiece. Bell scored one run, stole a base and hit one triple, while Goulart notched a double.
  • Cali also tallied a triple in game two, batting one-for-two.
  • Powell went one-for-three at the plate with a sac fly, two RBIs, one run scored and a stolen base.
  • Camarillo had a strong all-around game batting two-for-three with two runs scored and a stolen base.
  • McKeveny tossed the entire game compiling seven strikeouts, two walks and three hits.
  • The Bulldogs outhit Wagner, 10-3.

GAME NOTES

  • In game one, Ermish tied her season-high with six strikeouts while McKeveny broke her career-best in game two with seven strikeouts.
  • Bryant is now 13-7 all-time against the Seahawks.
