Terrier, Massasoit Invitationals next up for track and field

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University track & field team will be in double action this weekend, with some members competing in Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University and others heading to the Massasoit Invitational at Springfield College.

The Terrier Invite will see the Bulldogs compete in 14 events, while the Massasoit Invite will have the Black and Gold in 21.

"This week we have a split squad, with a portion of the team competing at the Terrier Invitational at BU and another portion competing at the Massasoit Classic at Springfield College," Bryant Director of Track & Field Mitchell Switzer said. "We have had a very successful start to our indoor season, and I am expecting some big marks from the team this weekend.  This week will test our athlete's ability to be self-reliant as the full team will not be at each meet. I expect the leadership amongst the team to really step up and carry the squad."

This year's track & field team has already broken five program records, including three last week at the Bates Invitational in Lewiston, Maine.

Freshman Chris Fasano (Lake Grove, N.Y.), who owns the program shot put record and fourth-best distance in the weight throw will enter each event at the Terrier Invitational this weekend.

Sophomore Jacklyn Sullivan (Plymouth, Mass.) will also head to Boston, competing in the 800-meter run. Last season, Sullivan broke the program record in the event, finishing in 2:13.45. Last week, she also entered the record books as the fastest finisher in the 600-meter.

Emily Cluck (Johnson City, N.Y.) will be competing in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. She finished with the best overall time in last week's 200-meter, crossing the finish line in 26.3 seconds.

Men's sprinter Brian Murray (Westford, Mass.) is slated to compete in the 200-meter dash at the Terrier Invite. Murray is coming off of a successful meet at last week's Bates Invitational, setting a program record in the 400-meter and winning the event.

The Massasoit Invitational will also have several key members of the 2018 Bulldog team in action. Evan Smith (Chester, Conn.) and James Giumetti (Duxbury, Mass.) are two of Bryant's seven entries into the 60-meter dash. Giumetti will also be competing in the long jump and triple jump, while Smith will compete in the 200-meter in Springfield.

A week after competing in the heptathlon, Ryan Dumont will see action in three events: the high jump, the 60-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay, teaming with Cole Hollis (North Smithfield, R.I.), Joel Urizar (Fairfield, Conn.) and Anthony Holloway (Forked River, N.J.).

Senior Rebecca Varney (East Longmeadow, Mass.) will compete in multiple events, as well. Varney, who competed in last week's pentathlon, will enter the 60-meter hurdles and women's high jump in Springfield.

Shirley Carrington (Dorchester, Mass.) and Alexandra Watts (Clinton, Conn.) will see action in both events. Watts will compete in the pole vault at both the Terrier and Massasoit Invitationals. Carrington is slated to run in the 60-meter and 200-meter dash in Boston and 60-meter dash, the long jump and the triple jump in Springfield.

The Terrier Invitational will be held on both Friday and Saturday, while the Massasoit Invitational is a one-day event running on Saturday.
