Mountaineers sweep Bulldogs

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Bryant University women's basketball was swept by Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon after an 87-49 defeat.

Senior Brooke Bjelko was the lone double-digit scorer for Bryant with 17 points.

KEY MOMENT

  • The Bulldogs had no answer for Mount St. Mary's outside shooting as 45 of its 87 points came from behind the three-point line.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Kandis Taylor found Bjelko posting up on the block for the first two points of the game. The small Bryant lead didn't last long when the Mountaineers took off in an 11-2 run to take back the advantage.
  • Despite the 21-10 deficit in the first quarter, Bryant posted a 66.7 three-point shooting percentage in the first quarter. Both Alana Perkins and Fatou Jallow helped the Bulldogs shoot two-of-three behind the arc in the first ten minutes.
  • It was back and forth in the second quarter, but the Mount shot 50% from the field (10-20 and 6-13 from three).
  • Stephanie Mayerhofer and Jallow netted the last set of threes of the game for the Black and Gold in the second quarter. Bryant finished the game four-for-13 from three.
  • With 1:50 left to go in the third quarter, O'Connor drove across the middle of the lane for an and-one. The three-point play was three of O'Connor's seven-straight points to close out the quarter, 66-43.
  • The Mount held the Bulldogs to just six points in the fourth quarter, as they outscored the Black and Gold, 21-6, in the final frame.

STATS

  • Bjelko led with 17 points of seven-of-19 shooting and three-of-four from the stripe. The senior pulled down six rebounds and dished out two assists.
  • Juliette Golden led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds.
  • Freshman Lucie Castagne dished out a game-high five assists in 17 minutes of play.
  • O'Connor added nine points shooting four-for-seven from the field.
  • Mayerhofer, Jallow, and Perkins contributed the only three three-pointers for the Bulldogs. Jallow was two-for-six for a total of six points. Mayerhofer (1-6) and Perkins (1-2) each finished the game with three points.
  • Mariona Planes Fortuny posted five points off two-of-four shooting.
  • Bryant finished the game with a 36.4 FG percentage (20-55) compared to Mount St. Mary's 44.4% (28-63). The Mountaineers drained 14 three's off 37 attempts.
  • The Mount outrebounded Bryant by four, 38-34.

GAME NOTES

  • Castagne's five assists mark a career-best.
  • Mount St. Mary's took the all-time series record in Emmitsburg with today's win, 7-6. Bryant is now 13-12 against the Mountaineers.
