Burns, Diaz Set Records In Final Regular Season Game

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- The Bryant women's lacrosse team dropped its regular season finale Saturday afternoon, falling to Wagner by a score of 12-11. Despite the loss, Bryant still clinched an NEC regular season co-championship and will host the conference tournament as the top seed. 

Cassidy Burns finished the game with a goal and four assists, breaking the Bryant all-time record for assists in the process. Emily Diaz also put herself in the history books, winning five draw controls to give her a Bryant single season record 120.

How it Happened

Q1: The Bulldogs got on the attack early, scoring five of the first six goals in the opening period. Alexa Weber found the net less than a minute into the game, before Burns connected with Emily Oliver for her record breaking assist. Six different players had a goal for Bryant in the first.

Q2: After a combined nine goals in the first, the two teams scored just once each in the second. Peyton Woodward scored Bryant's lone goal in the period off another assist from Burns. The Bulldogs and Seahawks were evenly matched throughout, each taking seven shots and turning the ball over two times.

Q3: Wagner cut the Bryant lead to one after two goals to start the second half.The Bulldogs were able to respond when Chamberlaine Bell and Diaz each scored their second goals of the game, but a late Seahawk goal made it a two score contest going into the final period.

Q4: The fourth period was kicked off by Weber's second goal of the game, but a 4-0 Wagner run over the following 13 minutes gave the Seahawks an 11-10 lead. Kenna Kaut tied the game with less than 90 seconds left, but a free position goal by Wagner's Kasey Dorney handed the Bulldogs their first loss in conference play.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Cassidy Burns' four assists give her 52 to close out the regular season, the most in the NEC and second most in the country. She now holds the Bryant all-time records for assists in a season and in a career.

  • Kenna Kaut scored twice for Bryant, including the late-game goal to tie the score. She extended her streak of scoring multiple goals in every game this season, and enters the NEC tournament tops in the conference with 51 scores. 

  • Emily Diaz scored twice in addition to her record setting five draw controls. Her 120 DC's are the most in the NEC and eighth most nationally heading into the postseason.

  • The Bulldogs end the regular season with a 7-1 record in the NEC, their second best mark all-time in the conference. They will head into the playoffs with an 11-4 overall record, also the best among NEC teams.
