WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATED IN DOUBLE OVERTIME THRILLER, 2-1
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - On Sunday, the Bryant University women's soccer team had the first tally of the game but was unable to hold the lead as they were defeated in a thrilling double overtime game against Northeast Conference opponent Mount St. Mary's by a score of 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs (2-9-0) looked like a completely different team when they took the field in the second. In the first three minutes of the second half the Bulldogs had six shots and two corner kick attempts. Unfortunately, they were unable to score on any one of those chances. Just 10 minutes later, Bryant earned its first score of the game. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hinck (Bow, N.H.) received a pass from freshman Alex Bengston (Andover, Mass.) that set her up inside the 6-yard box and Hinck was able to put the ball away in the upper left corner of the net for her team-leading third goal on the season.
Bryant held strong all the way until the 88th minute when Mount St. Mary's (4-7-2) was able to get on the board and force overtime. Sophomore Sadie Winship received a long pass from Kelly Baker on top of the 18-yard box and took the long shot that she was able to place into the left side netting to tie the game with only two minutes remaining.
With Mount St. Mary's controlling the tempo of play, the first overtime period went scoreless. The Bulldogs had their chances in the second overtime including a header that Hinck sent over the crossbar from inside the 6-yard box. The Mount continued its success in the second overtime period and was able to net the decisive mark in the 103rd minute of play. Senior Emily Menotti scored the game-winner.
In a heavy shooting affair, the Bulldogs outshot the Mount 31-24 and freshman goalkeeper Kelsi Jacob (Mahwah, N.J.) recorded a new career high 14 saves.
The Bulldogs continue their search for the team's first Northeast Conference victory when they host Sacred Heart on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Bryant Turf Complex.
