Bulldogs defeat Providence, 164-98, Friday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Elisabeth Schauer (Pelham, N.Y.) and freshman Taylor Poliseno (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) each won two events to lead the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team to a 164-98 victory over Providence on Friday night at the Chace Athletic Center Pool.

The Bulldogs (2-0) won nine total events on the evening to knock off the Friars (0-1).

Schauer was strong once again in the backstroke, winning both the 100 and 200 events. She won the 100 back with a time of 59.95 and followed it up with a victory in the 200 back with a time of 2:10.56. In just her second collegiate meet, Poliseno won the 50 free (24.79) and the 100 fly (59.55).

Bryant also received first-place finishes from freshman Meghan Claflin (Newburyport, Mass.) in the 1000 (10:46.57), sophomore Jamie Schaefer (Durham, N.C.) in the 200 fly (2:11.43) and sophomore Lauren Doerrman (Oley, Pa.) in the 500 free (5:22.26). The Bulldogs also won both the 200 medley and 400 free relay. Schauer, junior Alexandra Morreale (Short Hills, N.J.), sophomore Dana Yu (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Poliseno combined to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.65. Junior Mara Valenzuela (Bridgewater, N.J.), senior Taylor DeBever (Denver, Colo.), freshman Erin Daly (Reading, Mass.) and senior Kaitlin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass.) won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:40.47.

The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday when they head to New Britain, Conn., for a tri-meet with Central Connecticut and New Hampshire.
