Bryant sweeps Wagner, Central in weekend meet

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) finished off a four-win weekend after sweeping the sprint freestyle events and the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team took down both Central Connecticut and Wagner in a three-team meet Friday and Saturday at the Chace Athletic Center Pool.

Coach Cameron's Comments

"We swam to three huge wins this weekend with lots of new pool records and a great amount of fast swimming. We showed that we can be tough in the end of our races. I'm just very proud of our team today."

Coach LoCurto's Comments

"The divers are starting to sharpen up their technique as we approach the middle of the season. They are still missing on some dives, so there is a lot of room to improve but overall we are diving well right now."

Key Moment

In the same event the men broke the pool record, the women did the same as they touched first in the 400 medley relay (3:56.94) to put their mark on the record board in the first night of swimming in Smithfield. This capped a first day that saw the Bulldogs pull ahead for good against both squads.

How the Bulldogs Fared

  • In addition to aiding the 200 free relay (1:38.24) team to a victory to open the festivities, Rice won the 200 free (1:55.49), 50 free (24.40) and 100 free (53.28) to ensure a perfect weekend for the Bulldogs.
  • Junior Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain) earned a pair of individual victories in the 200 back (2:06.69) and 100 back (57.72).
  • Sophomore Alexa Rivera (Boynton Beach, Fla.) added a win on each day, winning the 200 individual medley (2:09.63) on Friday night and the 100 fly on Saturday (58.74).
  • Junior Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.) touched the wall first in the 100 breast (1:07.32), winning the event by 0.03 seconds.
  • Sophomore Elin Svard (Falun, Dalarna, Sweden) won the 400 individual medley (4:40.13) in the first individual event on Saturday.
  • Senior Kelci Abernethy (Chandler, Ariz.) led the Bulldogs on both boards Saturday, finishing second in the 1-meter (235.00) and winning the 3-meter (253.80).
