Bulldogs sweep relays on day two of Gompei

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's swimming and diving team swept both relays to highlight an outstanding second day at the Gompei Invitational on Saturday.

With the performance, the Bulldogs lead the 14-team meet with a combined score of 3,661.5.

How it Happened

  • The Bulldogs opened the meet by finishing 1-2 in the 200 free relay. Alexa Rivera (Boynton Beach, Fla.), Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.), Elin Svard (Falun, Sweden) and Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) won the event with a score of 1:34.98.
  • Lindsey Choate (Upper St. Claire, Pa.), Alyvia Beaudion (Cypress, Texas), Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico) and Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain) finished second at 1:36.27.
  • Meghan Veenstra (Tyngsborough, Mass.) kept things going by winning the 400 IM with a time of 4:33.04.
  • Scifo made it three-straight victories to start the day as she won the 100 back with a time of 55.92. Caitlin Dye (Natick, Mass.) finished fourth (57.74) and Choate finished ninth (59.17) to give the Bulldogs three in the top 10.
  • Freshman Sara Gendron (North Smithfield, R.I.) was Bryant's only swimmer in the 50 fly and she won the B final with a time of 26.33.
  • Bryant dominated the 200 free, taking home the top three spots. Rice finished first (1:50.79), Scifo was second (1:51.48) and DiFiore was third (1:52.70).
  • Choate and Dye both finished in the top five of the 50 back, posting times of 27.03 and 27.47.
  • The Black and Gold also dominated in the 100 breast, finishing 1-2. Heather Wong (Ramsey, N.J.) won the event with a time of 1:05.10 and Canavan finished less than a second behind.
  • Bryant also took home the top two spots in the 400 medley relay. Scifo, Canavan, Svard and Rice won the event with a time of 3:49.35, while Rivera, Wong, Alcala and Beaudion finished second.
  • Kelci Abernethy (Chandler, Ariz.) qualified for zones in the 3-meter dive with a school-record score of 280.25. Stephanie Jennings (Elmont, N.Y.), Gabrielle Ritzer (Sutton, Mass.) and Elizabeth Cahill (Ashland, Mass.) all set personal bests in the event.
