SMITHFIELD, RI - Thanks once again to solid singles play from No. 1 through No. 6, the Bryant University women's tennis team finds itself heading back to the Northeast-10 Conference Championships once again. The Bulldogs, the top-seed of the tournament, cruised to a 5-1 win over fourth-seed Stonehill Friday afternoon at the Bryant Tennis Courts. Bryant (22-2) will face the winner of the Saint Michael's - Southern New Hampshire semifinal this Sunday at 2 p.m. in Easton, MA.
Bryant led 2-1 after doubles play, dropping its lone match of the day at No. 2 doubles, but regrouped with a strong effort in singles, breezing to straight-set wins. Senior Michelle Burke (Barrington, RI) rolled to a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Sam Dircks at No. 3 singles while senior Lauren Mullen (Braintree, MA) defeated Caitlin Ryan, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman standout Katie Francazio (Cranston, RI) clinched the match with a two-set sweep of Elise Clark, 6-2, 6-1. It was Francazio's 22nd win in singles play this season. The Bulldogs will be seeking their fifth consecutive conference tournament championship.
