WOMEN'S TENNIS PICKS UP EXHIBITION WIN OVER STONEHILL, 5-4, SATURDAY

 

SMITHFIELD, RI - The Bryant University women's tennis team came out on top after a tough battle, finishing off their season against old NE-10 rivalry, Stonehill College with a 5-4 victory.

It was sophomore Valeria Couto-Cuervo's (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) match that clinched it for the Bulldogs' win in the end.  Couto-Cuervo dropped the first set, 6-2, but came back to win the second set, 7-6, pulling out the victory with an 11-9 win in the tie breaker.  In the third match, she pulled ahead once again with a victory of 10-6 in another tie breaker, leading the Bulldogs to a win over the Skyhawks.

The Bulldogs took two of three doubles with Dana Tausek (Sea Girt, NJ) and Valeria Couto Cuervo taking No. 1 doubles with 9-8 and Morganne Downing (Cherry Hills Village, CO) and Katie Francazio (Cranston, RI) taking the No. 2 victory with 8-6.

In singles, Downing defeated Herchel in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1.  Francazio was also victorious defeating Toegemann in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 as well.
