BRYANT WOMEN'S TENNIS EARNS FIRST WIN OF SEASON, 5-2 OVER MONMOUTH SATURDAY
SMITHFIELD, RI - Junior Morganne Downing (Cherry Hills,
CO) and freshman Irma Rodriguez (Guaynabo, Puerto
Rico) came up with big victories in singles play as the
Bryant University women's tennis team downed visiting Monmouth 5-2
Saturday afternoon at the Bryant Tennis Courts. With the win,
Bryant improves to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in Northeast
Conference play. Monmouth drops to 3-3 on the year (0-2 in
the NEC).
Opening with a win at No. 1 doubles with teammate Katie Francazio (Cranston, RI), Downing earned a solid straight-set win over Monmouth's Jessica Slinger at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Valeria Couto Cuervo (Guaynabo, P.R.) downed Katie Tierney 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles while sophomore Katie McCabe (Barrington, RI) helped clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Britney Dupuis at No. 6 singles.
With the match in hand, Rodriguez pulled out an exciting win over Diane Washer at No. 5 singles. Rodriguez fell 6-2 in the opening set but bounced back with a 7-5 win in the second. The Bulldog would take the victory with a 10-8 decision in the tiebreak.
