Volleyball Beats URI for Second Time This Season

SMITHFIELD, R.I.- The Bryant women's volleyball team defeated Rhode Island for the second time this season with a 3-0 sweep at the Chace Center. The Bulldogs finish their non-conference slate with an 8-8 record.

"I am so impressed with the leadership of  Mia Cergol, who had another double double. Aubrey Lapour was also brilliant on her first start as a Bulldog, hitting .423. Roommates Caroline and Haley were also very efficient tonight. The team showed its true grit coming back from a huge deficit in the second set, refocusing a point at a time." 

How it Happened

Set 1: Bryant held an early lead in the first set, but Rhode Island was able to keep it close. The Bulldogs began to pull away after a URI timeout, outsourcing the Rams 14-5 to close out a 25-15 set win. Aubrey Lapour had seven kills on 14 attacks to lead the team.

Set 2: URI took the early advantage in the second set, opening up an eight point advantage. Bryant began to mount a comeback after a timeout, and clawed their way back to tie the score at 19, and eventually win the set, 25-22. Caroline Kennedy had seven kills on nine attacks (.778 att. %) for the Bulldogs in the set.

Set 3: A close set early on, the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run to go up 14-6. After a Rams timeout, the Bulldogs continued to extend their gap, eventually winning the set 25-12. Alysa Wright had three kills and two blocks for Bryant, who held URI to a -.030 attack percentage in the set.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

• Caroline Kennedy had 13 kills on 18 attacks and only one error in the match. Her .667 attack percentage is the third highest for a single match in Bryant's Division I era.

• Aubrey Lapour led all players with 14 kills in her first career start. She finished with a .423 attack percentage and a block.

• Haley O'Brien finished with eight kills and a .583 attack percentage, as well as two solo blocks. Her 12 solo blocks lead the Bulldogs this season.

• Bryant's .359 attack percentage was their highest mark this season. They also held URI to a .075 attack percentage, allowing only 25 kills against 17 errors for the Rams.
