Bulldogs shutout in series finale at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland left hander Tyler Blohm tossed six shutout innings to lead the Terrapins to a 4-0 victory and a series sweep of the Bryant University baseball team in game two of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Bob 'Turtle' Smith Stadium.
With the loss, the Bulldogs are now 3-10 on the year and 1-8 all-time against the Terrapins (9-5). Bryant was held to just three runs and only 14 hits in the three games.
For the second-straight game, Maryland scored in the first inning. Zach Jancarski walked to start the game, went to second on a single, stole third and scored on a sac fly from Brandon Gum.
The game remained 1-0 until the fourth when the Terps struck for three two-out runs in the fourth. Kevin Smith doubled home a pair on a 2-0 pitch and then later scored on a balk to make it 4-0.
Bryant made things interesting as it brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth. Sophomore Nolan Hayward (Glendale, R.I.) hit a hard line drive to second that was dropped and senior Cole Fabio (Mahwah, N.J.) and freshman Jimmy Titus (Stafford, Conn.) both drew walks to load the bases with two outs. Maryland went to the bullpen for Andrew Miller and the lefty got a ground ball to third to end the threat.
Freshman Vito Morgese (Warwick, N.Y.) made his first collegiate start for the Bulldogs and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits over four innings. He walked four and struck out three on the day. Four Bryant relievers combined to shutout the Terrapins on just four hits over the final four innings. Junior Justin Snyder (Georgetown, Mass.) tossed a scoreless inning in his season debut, freshman Jack Ipsen (Eatontown, N.J.) notched a scoreless inning and junior Logan Lessard (Cromwell, Conn.) retired all four batters he faced. Redshirt-freshman Mason Palmieri (Lincoln, R.I.) recorded the final two outs.
Blohm had the Bulldogs off balance from the start, retiring the first 11 batters he faced and now allowing a hit until the fifth. He scattered three hits, walked one and struck out six.
Jancarski had two hits and a walk and reached base safely six times in the two games on Sunday, while Smith doubled twice. Maryland stole six bases in the second game and 10 in the two games combined.
The Bulldogs continue their spring break trip on Tuesday when they visit Richmond. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
