Karinchak Ks 11 in one-hit shutout of Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Junior James Karinchak (Walden, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout to lead the Bryant University baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Wagner in game one of Saturday's Northeast Conference doubleheader at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

The 1-0 victory is the first of its kind for the Bulldogs (8-18, 3-1 NEC) since they blanked North Carolina A&T on Mar. 11, 2014. The Seahawks fall to 6-15 overall and 2-3 in NEC play.

Karinchak was dominant on Saturday, striking out 11 of the 21 total outs in the game and facing just two batters over the minimum. It is the first one-hitter for a Bryant pitcher since Craig Schlitter one-hit Quinnipiac on Apr. 14, 2013. Karinchak's CG shutout is the fourth of his career, tying him with Peter Kelich for second in Bryant's DI record books. In addition, Karinchak picked up his 22nd career victory, putting him in sole possession of third place on Bryant's DI list. It is the fifth time in his career he has struck out 10+ batters.

The Seahawks picked up their only hit in the third as James Wise hit a soft single to left field. Karinchak then retired the next 13 batters in a row before hitting Anthony Godino with one out in the seventh. Godino then stole second to put the tying run in scoring position but Karinchak struck out Phil Capra and Freddy Sabido to end the ballgame. Wise's single and Sean Mazzio's fly out to center in the first were the only two balls that left the infield.

Bryant mustered up the only run of the game with a two-out rally in the fifth. Seniors Joe Paparelli (Preston, Conn.) and Cole Fabio (Mahwah, N.J.) worked back-to-back two-out walks and sophomore Nick Angelini (Bedford, N.H.) followed with a single through the right side to plate Paparelli with the only run.

Wagner starting pitcher Danny Marsh matched Karinchak for most of the afternoon. The NEC leader in ERA allowed just one run on two hits, walked five and struck out four. Nick Robino followed with two innings of scoreless relief.

Angelini and freshmen Chris Wright (Cumberland, R.I.) and Jimmy Titus (Stafford, Conn.) had the only three hits for the Black and Gold.
