Gustin, Mattison, Wainer sweep NEC honors

SOMERSET, N.J. – The Bryant University baseball trio of Jake Gustin, Tyler Mattison and Austin Wainer swept the Northeast Conference weekly awards announced on Tuesday.

Gustin was named the NEC Player of the Week, Mattison picked up NEC Pitcher of the Week and Wainer earned NEC Rookie of the Week. Bryant finished a 4-1 week with a sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson.

Gustin went 14-for-24 with five doubles, a home run, nine RBI and nine runs scored in five games for the Bulldogs. In three games vs FDU he hit .600 (9-15) with six RBI and seven runs scored. Gustin tied Bryant's DI single-game record for hits with five in Sunday's series finale.

Mattison picks up pitcher of the week honors after striking out a program record 15 batters in the series opener with FDU. He struck out 15, didn't walk a batter and allowed just four hits over 8.0 scoreless innings, improving his career NEC record to 13-2. Mattison struck out at least one batter in all eight innings and struck out the side three times.

Wainer earns his first-career weekly honor after tossing 6.0 total innings of relief on the week. In Wednesday's midweek win at URI, Wainer struck out five over 4.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory. He then tossed 2.0 innings of relief in Sunday's series finale vs. FDU.

In addition, James Ciliento was named an NEC Prime Performer. Ciliento went 11-for-24 on the week and 10-for-16 against FDU. That included a career-high five-hit day in the series opener against the Knights.

Bryant returns to NEC play this weekend with a three-game series at rival Sacred Heart.
