Schoff fans 9 as Bryant blanks Wagner, 6-0

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Tyler Schoff struck out a career-high nine batters over a career-high 7.0 scoreless innings as the Bryant University baseball team blanked Wagner, 6-0, on Saturday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park.

Schoff allowed just five baserunners over the course of his outing and three runs in the first two innings stood up for the Black and Gold. Bryant and Wagner have now split the first two games of the weekend series and will play the rubber match on Sunday.

Liam McGill paced the offense with three doubles, while Jake Gustin and Derek Smith each finished with multiple hits. Smith drove in a pair of runs and stole two bases.

  • After having a runner thrown out at home for the second out in the first, the Bulldogs rallied for a pair of two-out runs.           

How it Happened

  • Bryant pushed across two runs on four hits in the first inning Saturday. McGill nearly drove in the first run but Gustin was thrown out at the plate for the second out. Derek Smith, however, followed with an RBI single up the middle and Shane Kelly made it 2-0 two batters later with a single through the left side.
  • The Bulldogs added to their lead in the second. Tommy DiTullio walked, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a sac fly from Matt Woods.
  • Schoff did the rest, allowing just five batters to reach over 7.0 scoreless. He did face a little jam in the seventh as Wagner put two on with one out. Schoff earned his ninth strikeout for the second out and then got a fly out to end the threat.
  • Bryant put the game away with three runs in the top of the ninth. Brian Nicolas scored the first run of the inning and McGill doubled home a run. Smith closed the scoring with an RBI single.
