Bryant downs Mount, 20-3, on Thursday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team used a pair of six-run innings to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 20-3, on Thursday afternoon at Conaty Park.

Derek Smith had four hits, while James Ciliento, Shane Kelly and Jake Gustin collected three hits. The quartet combined for eight RBI and 12 runs scored. Ciliento had three hits, three RBI and three runs scored, Smith had four RBI and Gustin scored four times.

Tyler Mattison struck out eight and didn't issue a walk over 6.0 innings to earn his ninth win.

  • Smith broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the second, capping a six-run inning for the Bulldogs.             

How it Happened

  • Bryant opened the scoring in the first as Gustin tripled and scored on a Liam McGill ground out.
  • Mount tied the game with a solo home run in the second but the Bulldogs grabbed the lead for good with a six-run second. Damaurys Rodriguez drove in the first two runs of the inning with a single up the middle.
  • Matt Woods added an RBI single and Smith closed the scoring with a three-run triple to right center.
  • The Mountaineers plated a pair of runs in the fourth to make it 7-3.
  • The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Ciliento tripled to left center to score two before scoring on a throwing error to make it 10-3.
  • Bryant put the game away with six unearned runs in the fifth. A dropped pop fly into center extended the inning with two outs and Bryant took advantage. Smith, Ciliento and Kelly all delivered RBI singles and Tommy DiTullio closed the scoring with a two-run double.
  • A wild pitch and a sac fly plated two more runs for the Bulldogs in the sixth to make it 18-3.
