Three from baseball earn ABCA/Rawlngs All-Northeast honors

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University baseball standouts Liam McGill, Jake Gustin and Tyler Mattison were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Northeast Region teams on Wednesday.

McGill and Gustin were named to the first team, while Mattison garnered second team honors.

McGill had a season for the ages and enters the Men's College World Series as the national leader in batting average and OBP. He hit .471 with a .541 OBP, collecting nine doubles, nine home runs and 50 RBI. McGill reached safely in all 37 games he appeared in this year, finishing with 1.76 hits per game and 1.35 RBIs per game.

Gustin enjoyed a breakout season at the plate, hitting .386 with 13 doubles, six home runs, 36 RBI and 46 runs scored. He walked 18 times, struck out just 21 times and stole 10 bases. Gustin finished with 21 extra-base hits and 101 total bases. He had 21 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games.

Mattison was a dominant force on Fridays, going 10-3 with a 2.46 ERA in 80.1 innings. He struck out 95 and walked 14 on the year, ranking 10th nationally in WHIP (0.88), 19th in K:BB ratio and 33rd in walks/9. Mattison struck out 8+ batters in eight of his 13 starts, including a program-record 15 punch outs against Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Bulldogs have now had 25 ABCA/Rawlings All-Northeast players over the last nine seasons.

ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 15.

The finalists for the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I Gold Glove Team will be announced via Twitter on Monday, June 17, and the Gold Glove winners in all divisions will be announced on Wednesday, June 19. In all divisions, ABCA/Rawlings National Pitchers of the Year will be announced on Monday, June 24, followed by ABCA/Rawlings National Players of the Year on Wednesday, June 26.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 76th annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 2-5, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee.
