Bryant opens 2022 at No. 12 East Carolina

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University baseball team opens the 2022 season at No. 12 East Carolina this weekend. Opening Day first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 18.

All three games between the Bulldogs and Pirates will be streamed on ESPN+.

Bryant vs. East Carolina

  • Bryant and East Carolina will be meeting for the second time in program history. The two teams met in opening game of the 2016 Charlottesville (Va.) Regional.
  • ECU won that game, 9-1, thanks to a seven-run eighth inning.   

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant is coming off a 27-14-1 season. The Bulldogs won their ninth-straight NEC Regular-Season title but lost in the championship round of the NEC Tournament. 
  • The Bulldogs return five of their top seven hitters from a season ago. That list is led by All-NEC First Teamers Jake Gustin and Derek Smith. Gustin hit .386 with 101 total bases and 36 RBI, while Smith hit .321 with 39 RBI and 34 runs scored.
  • Damaurys Rodriguez is also back after hitting .338 with 33 RBI and a .392 OBP in 32 games as a true freshman. 
  • On the mound, the Bulldogs return just 100 innings. Austin Wainer is the most experienced returning Bulldog from a season ago, having tossed 22.2 innings as a true freshman. 
  • The Bulldogs will welcome six transfers to their pitching staff this spring.
  • Bryant's weekend rotation at ECU will be Collin Lowe (Richmond transfer), Jared Burrows (Hartford transfer) and Logan Frasier
