Bryant treks to Philly for a pair of weekend games

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team heads to the City of Brotherly Love this weekend for a pair of games against Temple and Drexel. The Bulldogs first square off with Temple on Friday before meeting with Drexel Sunday.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The two teams have met twice in program history as the series record is tied at one apiece.
  • In Bryant's first season as a Division I program in 2008, Temple topped the Bulldogs, 5-0.
  • The Bulldogs met with the Owls for the second time in 2010 and came out on top with a 2-1 victory.

A BIT ABOUT THE OWLS

  • Temple posts a 2-1 record so far this season, topping both Merrimack and LaSalle, 3-0, and falling to in-city rival La Salle, 3-0.
  • Freshman Kerrie Lorenz and junior Dani Batze lead the Owls with two goals each on the season. The rookie Lorenz also leads the team in points with five as she tallied an assist against La Salle.
  • Junior Cristina Carotenuto is the primary goalkeeper for the Cherry and White posting eight saves and two shutouts on the year.
  • Susan Ciufo leads the Owls in her first year as head coach after spending the past four years at Stonehill.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Sunday marks the third time in school history that the two teams have met as Drexel holds the series record, 2-0.
  • Last season, the Bulldogs fell in a 3-2 thriller in the Ocean State.

A BIT ABOUT THE DRAGONS

  • The Dragons have yet to notch a win this season as they post an 0-4 record.
  • Sophomores Puk Thewessen and Avery Powell each lead Drexel with two goals apiece. Thewessen also leads the team with two assists for a total of six points.
  • Sophomore Alexis Sokach and freshman Megan Hadfield have split the time in the cage this season. Sokach posts 11 saves while Hadfield posts 10 as each of the goalkeepers have allowed seven goals.
  • Denise Zelenak is in her 25th season as head coach of Drexel.

BRYANT NOTES AND NOTABLES

  • Most recently, the Bulldogs fell to both in-state rivals, Brown and Providence, posting a record of 0-3.
  • Despite the team not yet netting a goal this season, junior Aisling Madden (Leeds, Yorkshire, England) leads the Bulldogs with four shots and one on frame.
  • Freshman Isa Oldekamp (Rotterdam, Netherlands) leads the Black and Gold with two shots on goal and one defensive save.
  • Sophomore Marijn Jaarsma (Uithoorn, Netherlands) has tallied 14 saves so far this season with a save percentage of .700.
