Bryant drops heartbreaker to Dartmouth, 63-61, in OT

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Charles Pride recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds but Dartmouth College scored with 0.9 seconds remaining in overtime to sneak past the Bryant University men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center.

Dartmouth tied the game with 2.3 seconds remaining in regulation on a three-pointer and then scored the game-winning basket with 0.9 seconds left in overtime to hand the Bulldogs a heartbreaking defeat. Following a miss, Dartmouth forced a Bryant turnover and Aaryan Rai's layin rolled around the rim before falling home.

Pride paced the Black and Gold with his third 20-point scoring performance of the year. He also added a season-high 14 rebounds and four steals. Peter Kiss finished with 19 points and Hall Elisias had nine rebounds and four blocks. Bryant, however, turned the ball over 20 times, giving the Big Green 28 points off of them.

Key Moments

  • Brendan Barry hit a three from the left wing out of a timeout with 2.3 seconds left in regulation. Rai then won the game for the Big Green, laying home a lob pass from Ryan Cornish with 0.9 to go in overtime.     

How it Happened

  • Bryant used outstanding defense to start Sunday's contest on a 10-0 run. Three-point baskets from Pride and Eleeda sparked the run on the offensive side.
  • The Big Green would work their way back into the game, tying it at 14-all with 10:02 to go in the first.
  • Five Bryant free throws would help the home team build some separation but back-to-back threes gave Dartmouth its first lead, 25-24, with 1:25 to go in the half.
  • Kiss would answer with a fadeaway jumper to give the Black and Gold a 26-25 lead at the break.
  • Pride finished the first half with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Sour then got the Bulldogs going in the second half with a three from the top to make it 35-28 at the 16:00 mark.
  • Dartmouth would cut into the deficit once again but Kiss had an answer driving to the basket for a pair of layups to give the Bulldogs a 39-33 lead at the under-12 timeout.
  • Bryant, however, would go scoreless for the next 8:23 seconds. The Bulldogs went 0-for-12 from the field as Dartmouth jumped ahead, 46-39.
  • Chris Childs stunted the run with a layup at the 3:16 mark, making it 46-41. Adham Eleed would follow with a deep three two minutes later to make it 46-44.
  • The Bulldogs then grabbed a Dartmouth miss and called timeout to setup a play. Pride ended up with the ball and drilled a three from the right wing to make it 47-46 with 25 seconds left.
  • Bryant would get the ball back on another Big Green miss and Pride was able to finish a run out with nine seconds left.
  • Dartmouth then called timeout with five seconds left and inbounded the ball to the far corner. Cam Krystkowiak leapt for the pass and moved it to Barry in one motion. Barry then hit the three to tie it.
  • Kiss scored the first four points of overtime but threes from Barry and Taurus Samuels gave Dartmouth a 59-55 lead.
  • Pride answered with a three of his own but the Big Green made it a three-point game on the next possession.
  • Kiss then stepped up and drilled a deep three from the top, tying the game with 33 seconds to go.
  • The Big Green then missed a layup with seven seconds remaining and Bryant grabbed the rebound. Dartmouth, however, tipped the ball away and Cornish lobbed it to Rai for the win.
