Bryant opens season with victory over Thomas

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Eight players scored in double figures as the Bryant University men's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a 147-39 victory over Thomas College (Maine) at a boisterous Chace Athletic Center on Monday night.

The Bulldogs set single-game records for points scored, field goals (55), three-point field goals (19) and tied the program record with 24 steals on their way to a loud opening night victory.

Charles Pride led the Black and Gold with 23 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists, while Sherif Gross-Bullock posted 22 points, six assists and five steals. Doug Edert made five threes and finished with 19 points, while Earl Timberlake, Tyler Brelsford, Kvonn Cramer, Miles Latimer and Antwan Walker all finished in double figures.

  • Pride and Cramer set the tone for the night with an alley-oop dunk off the back board in the first half.

How it Happened

  • After Thomas took an early 4-2 lead, Gross-Bullock drilled his first three as a Bulldog to give the Bulldogs a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
  • Pride and Cramer electrified the boisterous Chace Athletic Center moments later as Pride passed the ball off the back board and Cramer slammed it home in transition.
  • Timberlake added his own fireworks at the 11:17 mark, throwing down a vicious one-handed slam.
  • Consecutive layups from Pride, Gross-Bullock and Timberlake pushed Bryant's lead to 27, 49-22, with 5:27 left in the first half.  
  • Edert got the Black and Gold rolling in the second half, hitting a trio of threes in the first two and a half minutes.
  • Brelsford and Rochelle then each hit a pair of threes to push Bryant's lead to 119-31.
  • Tay Mosher then hit back-to-back threes to tie and break the single-game record.

  • Bryant finished the game 55-of-86 (64.0 percent) from the field, 19-of-36 (52.8 percent) from three and 18-of-25 (72.0 percent) from the line.
  • The Bulldogs held a 61-21 lead in rebounds.
  • Bryant posted 32 assists, 24 steals and turned the ball over just 11 times.
  • Pride led all scorers with 23 points and picked up a double-double with 12 rebounds. He added seven assists.
  • Gross-Bullock posted 22 points (4-of-7 from three), six assists and five steals.

  • Bryant celebrated its 2021-22 championship team prior to the game, unveiling three banners in the Chace Athletic Center rafters.
  • The Bulldogs are now 25-2 at the Chace Athletic Center since the start of 2020-21.

  • The Bulldogs previous record for threes was 17 set vs Monmouth on Jan. 22, 2011.
