Bryant downs Syracuse on Saturday night, 73-72

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sherif Gross-Bullock's runner with 0.8 seconds left bounced off the rim three times before falling home as the Bryant University men's basketball team knocked off Syracuse, 73-72, on Saturday night at the JMA Wireless Dome.

The victory moves the Bulldogs to 5-1 on the season and is the program's second over a school from a Power 5 conference.

After Syracuse hit a pair of free throws at the other end with 8.1 seocnds to go, Bryant elected to not call a timeout and Gross-Bullock did the rest. The Washington, D.C., native sprinted down the court and raced to the basket, pulling up and letting a floater go from five feet. The ball caromed high up off the back rim before bouncing twice more on the iron and falling through with 0.8 seconds left.

Gross-Bullock finished with 15 points, while Antwan Walker had 18 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocks on a night in which he played a majority of minutes with four fouls. Earl Timberlake added 13 points and Charles Pride score 13 as well in his return to his hometown. Miles Latimer chipped in nine points and four rebounds.

How it Happened

  • Bryant got off to a good start thanks to buckets from Timberlake and Walker. The second basket prompted a Syracuse timeout with 17:49 to play.
  • The Bulldogs' run would make it 6-0 before the Orange hit back-to-back threes to tie the game.
  • A Doug Edert three and a Kvonn Cramer layup capped a 7-0 Bryant run to give the Black and Gold a 13-6 lead with 13:30 left.
  • Pride drilled his first basket in the Dome with a corner triple to make it 16-11.
  • Bryant extended its lead to 13, 35-22, thanks to Latimer. He was fouled shooting a three and made all three free throws before drilling a three from the top.
  • In between, tempers flared following an offensive foul on Syracuse. A Syracuse player slapped a Bryant player and the Bryant player slapped him back. Following the scuffle, three Bryant players and one Syracuse player were ejected.
  • Bryant closed the half with an exclamation point as Gross-Bullock hit a buzzer-beating three from midcourt, giving the Bulldogs a 40-29 lead at the break.
  • Pride had a big putback bucket to stop a Syracuse run and give Bryant a 44-37 lead with 16:49 to play.
  • Latimer and Gross-Bullock followed with back-to-back threes to give the Bulldogs a 50-37 lead with 14:53 left.
  • The Orange were able to widdle Bryant's lead down, pulling within two with 5:17 left.
  • A three on Syracuse's next possession made Bryant's lead one, 60-59. Jesse Edwards followed with a layup to give the Orange their first lead, 61-60 with 3:20 to go.
  • Timberlake answered on the other end with an and-one, posting a fantastic finish in the lane.
  • Chris Bell gave Syracuse a 66-65 lead with 1:30 left but Walker canned two free throws to get Bryant the lead back.
  • The Orange then hit 3-of-4 free throws, two coming on a technical, to take a 69-67 lead with 50 seconds left.
  • Timberlake then canned two free throws to tie it and Gross-Bullock turned a steal into a two-handed flush and a 71-69 Bryant lead with 25 seconds left.
  • After Syracuse hit 1-of-2, Gross-Bullock was fouled. He missed both and the Orange hit two free throws on the other end with 8 seconds left.
  • Gross-Bullock then got the inbounds and raced into the lane, letting go a floater. The initial shot caromed high up above the rim before eventually falling through the twine with 0.8 seconds left.

  • The victory is Bryant's first against a team from a Power 5 conference since it defeated Boston College in 2012.
  • Bryant's men's lacrosse team also defeated the Orange in the Dome, beating Syracuse in the 2014 NCAA First Round.
  • Pride finished in double-figures for the 59th time in his 89-game career.
  • Pride now has 1,204 points and 615 rebounds in his career. He also now has 196 career assists.
  • Walker scored in double-figures for the fourth consecutive game and for the fifth time this season.
  • Walker posted his second-straight double-double and the seventh double-double of his career.
  • Walker is now averaging 15.5 ppg and 8.5 rpg over his last four.
