Tombs ties for second, Bulldogs finish fifth in Lonnie Barton Invitational

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University golf team carded a two-round 612 and finished 36-over par for a fifth place finish at the Lonnie Barton Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla.  

Following an opening-round 75 (+5) on Monday, junior Ryan Tombs (Bedford, N.H.) jumped 11 spots up the leader board on Tuesday with a second-round 71 (-1) to finish tied for second. Tombs was the only golfer in the 57-player field on Tuesday to finish under par. McKinley Slade (Saunderstown, R.I.) dropped three spots on Tuesday and finished tied for 17th with a 152 score (+8).

Freshman Jake Ratti (Hanover, Mass.) was the only other Bulldog to finish in the top-25, as he tied for 19th competing as an individual with a final score of +10 (78-76=154).  

Also competing as an individual was frosh Ryan Brown (Bedford, N.H.), who finished 12 over par with a combined score of 156 to sit tied for 27th, as seniors Kyle Buschmann (East Haddam, Conn.) and Joe Walp (Portland, Maine) trailed by just one stroke. Sophomore Gabriel Van Ness (Clinton, Conn.), the final member competing with the team, finished tied for 44th with a 163 (+18).

IPFW took home first place among the nine schools competing, and it had the two top performers in Zach Schroeder (-1) and Jake Groninger (+2). Tombs finished just three strokes behind the leader.  

The Bulldogs take the fairways again on April 2nd at the Towson Spring Invitational in Grasonville, Md.
