Bulldogs finish fourth, Tombs third at 2016 Connecticut Cup

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Ryan Tombs (Bedford, N.H.) posted his best round of the tournament Tuesday (72), closing out the 2016 Connecticut Cup in third place to lead the Bryant University golf team to a fourth-place finish.

The Bulldogs fell two places despite splitting the difference in their final round (299-297-298=894). Bryant finished just one stroke out of third (Cornell, 893) and two back from second-place UConn (892). Boston College would win the tournament with a three-round 888 (+24).

BC's Matt Maumec and St. John's Gerry Mackedon tied for first in the individual circuit, with the latter winning medalist honors after a sudden-death playoff. Tombs finished just a stroke off from the pair with a 218, good for two over par on the three-round set (73-73-72).

Freshman Will Del Biaggio (San Jose, Calif.) fell 11 spots but still finished second for the Black and Gold in a tie for 35th with a total score of 228 (77-74-77). Senior McKinley Slade (Saunderstown, R.I.) climbed nine slots to finished knotted for 41st after a third-round 73 (229, +13), while rookie Matthew Stafford (Suffield, Conn.) tied for 50th in the field carding a 231 on the two-day event. Senior John Roberts (West Hartford, Conn.) finished in a tie for 52nd (78-78-76=232).

Competing as an individual, sophomore Ryan Brown (Bedford, N.H.) rose five spots with a Tuesday 74, finishing tied for 15th with a three-round score of 224 (+8).

Bryant returns to the greens Thursday for a dual match against Brown at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I.
