O'Rourke powers Bryant past BU on Tuesday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Marc O'Rourke (Hingham, Mass.) posted seven points and four others registered multi-point outings as the Bryant University men's lacrosse team defeated Boston University, 15-10, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Beirne Stadium. 

O'Rourke finished with five goals and two assists, while freshman Kevin Groeninger (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) recorded his first-career hat trick and senior Trevor Weingarten (Allendale, N.J.) added a goal and three assists to lead the Bulldogs to their first win in four tries against the Terriers. Sophomore Luke Caracciolo (Centreville, Va.) finished with seven saves.

COACH PRESSLER'S COMMENTS
"We were ready to play and compete today. BU is a handful and skilled everywhere. It was the first time in this early season that we put four quarters of complimentary lacrosse together on both sides of the ball. I'm proud of our guys on the first win of the year. Now on to Dartmouth."

KEY MOMENT

  • Leading 5-3 at the half, the Bulldogs scored five goals in the span of 5:20 to open a 10-3 lead with 4:25 to go in the third quarter. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bryant stormed out of the gates on Tuesday, scoring three times in the first four minutes. Redshirt-freshman Logan McGovern (Darien, Conn.) finished a beautiful pass from O'Rourke to start the scoring, and O'Rourke and Groeninger would follow with unassisted goals to make it 3-0. 
  • The Terriers would cut the lead to 3-2 before O'Rourke's second of the game gave the Black and Gold a 4-2 after the first quarter. 
  • O'Rourke completed the hat trick four minutes into the second quarter off an assist from redshirt-senior Jake Buonaiuto (Miller Place, N.Y.)
  • Sophomore Mason Balch (Westfield, Mass.) started the Bulldogs' five-goal run in the third quarter off an assist from O'Rourke.
  • McGovern and O'Rourke would add a pair of man-up goals and Groeninger completed his first-career hat trick with 4:25 to go in the third to make it 10-3. 
  • BU pulled itself back in the game with four of the next five goals, with a marker at 13:55 of the fourth making it 11-7.
  • Buonaiuto would answer with his first of the game and senior Zach Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.) followed with his first goal of the season to make it 13-8.
  • Unassisted goals from O'Rourke and Buonaiuto closed Bryant's scoring.  

STATS

  • O'Rourke led Bryant with five goals (one shy of his career high), two assists and seven points (one shy of his career).
  • Weingarten posted a goal and three assists for a season-high four points.
  • Groeninger recorded his first-career hat trick. 
  • Buonaiuto potted a pair of goals and now has a team-leading 10 goals on the year. 
  • McGovern added two goals. 
  • Caracciolo posted seven saves and led the Bulldogs with five ground balls. 
  • Coffey, redshirt-sophomore Dante Pasqualoni (South Windsor, N.Y.) and senior James Stoler (Penfield, N.Y.) all finished with four ground balls. Pasqualoni added three caused turnovers.
  • Stoler went 12-for-18 in the faceoff X. 
  • Bryant outshot BU, 50-26.
  • BU held the edge in ground balls, 40-38. 

GAME NOTES

  • Bryant is now 1-3 in four all-time meetings with BU.
  • O'Rourke improved to 115 career points, four back of Alex Zomerfeld for 14th on Bryant's all-time list.

UP NEXT

Bryant has a quick turnaround as it travels to Hanover, New Hampshire, to take on Dartmouth this Saturday. Face-off is scheduled for noon.
