Bulldogs open 2019 campaign in Riverside, Calif.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's soccer team opens the 2019 campaign on Friday evening when they travel to Riverside, Calif. to take on UC Riverside.

The Series

This is the first meeting in program history between the two schools.

 

Bulldogs Notes and Notables

  • Bryant is coming off a 5-9-3 overall record in 2018, going 4-2-2 in conference play with a trip to the NEC Championship. 
  • This is the first of eight road games for the Black and Gold in 2019.
  • The Bulldogs are looking to repeat their defensive performance that they put up in conference play last season when they allowed a 0.36 goals-against average. 
  • Senior Olivier Larente (LaSalle, Quebec) is slated to start between the posts for Bryant. He boasted five clean sheets for the Bulldogs last season. 
  • Seniors George Gill (Cork, Munster, Ireland), James Cochrane (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Victor Rey (Lincoln, R.I.) lead the Bulldogs as captains for the 2019 season. 

 

A bit about the Highlanders

  • UC Riverside is coming off a Big West Conference Championship in 2018 with a 8-10-2 overall record in 2018 and 4-2-1 record in conference play. The Highlanders also made a trip to the NCAA Tournament where they lost, 1-0, to Pacific. 
  • The team was selected to finish sixth in the Big West Conference this season by the preseason coaches' poll. 
  • The Highlanders went 2-0 during preseason scoring 10 goals, while only allowing one in each of their two games.
  • Midfielder Daniel Aguirre was named to the 2019 Big West Preseason All-Conference Team after being the 2018 Big West Tournament MVP and an all-conference first team honoree.
