LIU Brooklyn sweeps Bryant to end 2019 season

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Bryant University softball team closes out its season at LIU Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon. Despite tallying two home runs on the day, LIU Brooklyn swept the Bulldogs, 2-1, in game one and, 9-1, in game two.

COACH FRENCH'S COMMENTS

"Tough way to end," said head coach Nick French. "Gabi really pitched her heart out in game one, but we couldn't get the big hit. I'm so proud of all of our seniors for the people they have grown into and the leadership they provided the underclassmen with this year. They will be missed dearly."

KEY MOMENT GM1

  • After tying the game at one apiece, LIU Brooklyn brought in the winning run with a sac fly to center field with the bases loaded.

HOW IT HAPPENED GM1

  • Marianna Politis (Arcadia, Calif.) started things off in the top of the second by sending a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run, 1-0.
  • LIU Brooklyn tied up the game in the bottom of the third. A pair of singles put the Blackbird on second and third before Kiana Cisneros poked a ground ball through to left field to bring in the tying run, 1-1.
  • The Blackbirds take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Ryleigh Bermea hits a hard ball to Tiffany Bell (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) in center field for the out, but LIU Brooklyn tags up on third for the go-ahead run, 2-1.

STATS GM1

  • Politis was one-for-three in game one producing the only run for the Bulldogs with a home run.
  • Freshman Toni Camarillo (Corona, Calif.) tallied the only other hits for Bryant with two hits during two at-bats. Camarillo stole the only base of the day for the Black and Gold.
  • Gabrielle Ermish (Pottstown, Pa.) pitched a complete game with two strikeouts, one walk, and nine hits.
  • The Bulldogs were outhit 9-3.

KEY MOMENT GM2

  • LIU's four-run rally in the bottom of the first produced all of the offense that it would need in five hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED GM2

  • LIU Brooklyn took the lead early in the first inning. The Blackbirds brought in their first run with a bunt, followed by a triple to right field to bring in two more, 3-0.
  • The Blackbirds followed the triple with another extra-base hit when Ryleigh Bermea hit a double to left center to give LIU a four-run cushion.
  • In the top of the second, senior Jessica Gradillas (Nogales, Ariz.) responded with a solo home run off a 2-2 pitch to cut into the deficit, 4-1.
  • The bottom of the fourth brought a five-run rally for LIU Brooklyn. V Lowe singled up the middle to bring in both runners in scoring position before another single advanced two more for the seven-run lead, 8-1.
  • A wild pitch followed by a passed ball scored the final run of the game, 9-1.

STATS GM2

  • Gradillas scored the lone run of the game for the Black and Gold with a home run. The senior finished the final game of her career batting one-for-two.
  • Nicole Zukowski (Medford, N.Y.) and Camarillo each went one-for-two for the Bulldogs notching the only other hits. Zukowski earned extra bases with a double in her first at-bat.
  • Colby Norris (Toano, Va.) started the game in the circle pitching the first three innings. Norris struck out one and gave up nine hits.
  • LIU outhit Bryant, 13-3.  

GAME NOTES

  • Politis's homer in game one marks the first of the season and third of her career.
  • The Bulldogs fall to 9-13 all-time against the Blackbirds.
