Women finish first, broken record highlight season opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – It was a good day for the Bryant University men's and women's track and field team as they kicked off the 2021 outdoor season at home.

Senior Nick Alessandro highlighted the meet by shattering Bryant's javelin record with a 63.71m mark. The record was previously held by Joseph Schwab in 2014 with a mark of 57.51m. On the women's side, the team finished first overall which marked the first time the Bulldogs topped Long Island in a meet.

COACH SWITZER'S COMMENTS

"It's a little surreal to think that this was our first track meet in over a year, but it was awesome to watch the team go out and battle. Today was about learning to compete again and getting a benchmark for where we're at as a team. We walked away with first-place finishes in 19 events, had a school record get shattered, and had the overall team win on the women's side. It's a really great start to our season. There's a lot of talent across the team this year and I'm excited to see where we go the rest of the season."
