Holloway helps Bulldogs to season opener win

LOWELL, MASS. – In the final seconds, the Bryant University women's basketball team came out victorious over UMass Lowell, 58-57, on Tuesday night.

KEY MOMENTS

  • With one second remaining in the game, Sydney Holloway (Morgantown, W. Va.) stole the ball from the River Hawks and was fouled during an attempted fastbreak layup. Holloway knocked down her first free throw to win the game for the Bulldogs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first quarter, the River Hawks went on a 5-0 run to take the lead as they entered the second quarter.
  • In the second quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the River Hawks 17-14 led by Haley Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) and Kierra Palmer (Aberdeen, Md.) as they each scored two three-pointers a piece.
  • The Bulldogs came out on fire going into the second half. With three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Holloway made two back-to-back layups to tie and give the Bulldogs their first lead since the first quarter.
  • Bryant led the River Hawks by four points going into the fourth quarter before UMass Lowell took it back with six minutes remaining. Lowell did not give up its lead until the final second when Holloway ended the game with a steal and a free throw.

STATS

  • Holloway led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 13 rebounds, tallying her first double-double of the 2018-19 season.
  • Connors went 4-7 from behind the arc scoring a total of 16 points.
  • Palmer led the Bulldogs with nine assists on the night.
  • Hannah Scanlan (Rumson, N.J.) was the third leading scorer tonight for the Black and Gold with 14 points. The sophomore recorded two blocked shots and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • As a unit, Bryant outshot Lowell shooting 43.1% from the field as compared to the River Hawks 41.1%.

GAME NOTES

  • Tuesday's meeting marked the first game of the 2018-19 season for both teams.
  • Bryant now leads UMass Lowell 14-9 all time.
  • Tonight's win marks the first season opener win for the Bulldogs since 2016 when Bryant topped Vermont 63-57.
  • Coach Mary Burke is now just nine games away from her 400 career win.
