LIU Brooklyn visits Smithfield for NEC opener

SMITHFIELD - The Bryant University women's basketball team kicks off Northeast Conference play as LIU Brooklyn visitis Smithfield tomorrow January 5 for a 1 p.m. matchup.

After scoring her 1,000th point on December 30, Sydney Holloway (Morgantown, W. Va.) will be honored before the start of the game for becoming the 25th member of the club as well as the fastest in Bryant women's basketball Division I history to reach the milestone.

Saturday's game is one of two games being played at Chace as the Bryant University men's basketball team also plays LIU Brooklyn at 4 p.m. Admission for the women's game will be accepted if fans choose to stay for the men's game.

SCOUTING THE BLACKBIRDS
The Blackbirds currently post a 1-10 record after grabbing their first win over Lafayette on 12/29, 55-50.

Sophomore guard Jeydah Johnson leads LIU in scoring averaging 12.9 points per game scoring nine against Lafayette on Saturday.

Head Coach Stephanie Del Preore leads LIU in her fourth season.

SERIES HISTORY
Bryant holds the series record over LIU, 13-4. Last season, the Bulldogs split with the Blackbirds, 1-1, winning the first meeting by 19 points, 75-56. When the two teams met again in March, LIU took the the eight point win, 69-61 in Brooklyn.

LAST TIME OUT: HOLY CROSS 81, BRYANT 62
Bryant most recently fell to Holy Cross, 81-62, as the Bulldogs closed out their non-conference schedule.

Sydney Holloway joined the 1k club becoming the fastest to reach the milestone in Bryant's Division I history. Holloway scored a game high 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Haley Connors (West Hartford, Conn.) ended a two-game scoring draught dropping 14 points against the Crusaders shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.

SEEING DOUBLE
Junior forward Sydney Holloway tallies eight double-doubles so far this season, 27 for her career leading the NEC. Holloway ranks tenth in the country for her double-double efforts averaging a double-double a night with 18.9 points per game 12.3 rebounds per game.

DISHING IT OUT
Kierra Palmer (Aberdeen, Md.) led the Bulldogs in their season opener at UMass Lowell with nine assists. She currently leads the Bulldogs with 44 assists so far on the season and is ranked second in the NEC for assists per game with 4.0.  Palmer is 43 assists away from 500 and only six players in NEC's history has ever reached the milestone.

PICKING POCKETS
Fifth-year Naomi Ashley (Hamilton, Ont.) leads Bryant with 20 steals thus far this season. The Ontario native ranks fourth in the conference with 1.82 steals per game. Ashley swiped a season-high seven steals against Brown and has followed up her defensive performance compiling 4 at BC and 5 at Hartford.
 
NO, NO, NO
Sophomore Hannah Scanlan (Rumson, N.J.) posted a multi-block game in Bryant's season opener at UMass Lowell with two. Scanlan most recently denied a shot at Hartford to help Bryant tie its season-high of 4 blocks in one game. Sydney Holloway is second on the team with five blocks on the season and is the only other Bulldog besides Scanlan to post a multi-block effort. Holloway posted two against Holy Cross.

ON THE RISE
Holloway has continued to climb the Division I scoring ranks at Bryant jumping five spots already this year. Holloway reached the 1,000 point milestone on 12/30 against Holy Cross becoming the fastest player in Bryant women's basketball Division I history to do so.

HALEY CONNORS FOR THREE
Senior guard Haley Connors started off the season hot as one of Bryant's top scorers scoring a career-high 18 points in Bryant's home opener against Brown. Connors has since went on a scoring draught in December scoring a total of just five points across four different games. After the 21-day break, Connor's hot hand has come back as the senior scored 14 points against Holy Cross shooting 6-of-9 from the field and sinking the only two three's for the Black and Gold.

WELCOME TO THE 1K CLUB
On Sunday, December 30, Sydney Holloway hit her 1,000th career point at the free throw line in the fourth quarter against Holy Cross. Holloway is the 25th women's basketball player to enter the club (fifth in the D1 era) and is the fastest to ever do so. The last time a women's basketball player at Bryant reached the milestone was Breanna Rucker in 2016. 

BOARDING SCHOOL
Bryant is now third in the NEC with 452 rebounds, second with 41.09 rebounds per game. The Bulldogs have only been outrebounded twice this year at Boston College, 47-37, and Holy Cross, 51-34. The Bulldogs were even wtih West Virginia, Brown, and Providence. Holloway leads the Bulldogs and the conference with 135 rebounds ranking her 18th in the country. The junior forward also ties for most offensive rebounds a game (5) with Brandy Thomas of LIU Brooklyn as both players are fifth in the country for their efforts.

CHARITY STRIPE
Bryant is second in the conference for free throw attempts, behind Saint Francis Brooklyn, and 61st in the country with 250. They are also second in the NEC for free throws made with 166 giving the Bulldogs a percentage of 66.4%. Sydney Holloway leads the conference in free throw attempts (80) and free throws made (52). 

ALLHEART #ALLHUSTLE
Bryant came up with a motto for the 2018-19 season that directly correlates with how the Bulldogs take the floor during every game.
